OCT 2 — OCTOBER IS DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH

Hits: 197

In recognizing October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month, County Executive George Latimer, the Westchester County Board of Legislators and Hope’s Door will “Shine a Light” on victims and survivors of domestic violence.

In an effort to raise awareness, show community solidarity in support of prevention efforts and provide available resources, they SPOKE out on the issue at a special ceremony and candlelight vigil on the first day of Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Other participating advocates include the Westchester County Office for Women (OFW), Legal Services of the Hudson Valley, My Sister’s Place, Pace Women’s Justice Center (PWJC), WestCOP Victims Assistance Services and New Dawn Family Resource Center.

Latimer said: “We need to do everything we can at the County level to make it safe for victims of domestic violence to report incidences and have conversations about their experiences. So much fear and shame cloud the lives of Domestic Violence victims and their families. It is time to move them from the darkness of these hidden circumstances to the light of healing, support and understanding.”

Board of Legislators Chairman Vedat Gashi said: “October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, reminding us of the important work we’ve done to support those impacted and the ongoing commitment needed year-round. This event highlights the urgency of addressing domestic violence and reinforces our dedication to supporting survivors and preventing future incidents.”

OFW Director Robi Schlaff said: “Domestic Violence is often hidden and families suffer in silence. The Westchester County OFW is here to assist you. We are confidential and bi-lingual. And yes, we help male victims as well. Please get in touch if you or someone you know is being harmed by an intimate partner. We provide services County-wide and if we can’t help you, we will find someone who can.”

We can offer shelter, counseling and legal services. Please know that you are not alone and that abuse is never your fault.  You can reach us 24/7 at our Hotline (888) 438-8700. Making the call may be the bravest thing you ever do but we’ll be there on your journey to safety, independence and healing.”

Sirotkin said: “At Legal Services of the Hudson Valley, we offer free and comprehensive civil legal services through our highly qualified and diverse team of attorneys and legal professionals to protect client rights and promote equal justice for our community members.  In our Domestic Violence Advocacy Unit, our team works tirelessly to ensure clients’ safety and rights by offering both protection and advocacy for victims of domestic abuse. My Sister’s Place Interim Chief Executive Officer Denise Durham Williams said: “During National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, My Sisters’ Place joins with other organizations across the country to reaffirm our commitment to ending domestic violence and to honor, stand united with and lift up the voices of courageous survivors and their families. We speak up and speak out, educating our many communities and encouraging action to ensure all relationships embrace the principles of respect, equality and safety.”

PWJC Executive Director Cindy J. Kanusher, Esq. said: “We are so happy to be joining together during DV Awareness month with our community partners to bring awareness about the resources available in our County for DV survivors. It is so important for those living with domestic violence to know that they are not alone and that there is help available. At PWJC, we provide free legal services for survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault and elder abuse, and one of our main priorities is to ensure access to our services to those who need our help. We so appreciate the opportunity to highlight the services and help available from PWJC and all of our partner agencies.”

WestCOP Victims Assistance Services Program Director Samantha Favara said: “At Victims Assistance Services, we provide free, comprehensive victim-centered services to all victims of crime. We aim to mitigate the shame-inducing stigma of victimization, and provide all victims the opportunity to regain a sense of dignity, empowerment and wholeness through compassionate services. We may be reached at our 24/7 hotline at 914-345-9111. We hear you, we see you, and you are not alone.”

New Dawn Family Resource Center Vice President David M. Ryan said: “It is the mission of the New Dawn Family Resource Center to provide and expand support for programs and services for victims of domestic abuse, sexual assault, elder abuse, and human trafficking. By having these conversations publicly and speaking out against domestic violence, especially as we enter October which is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, we can gain insight as to the serious nature of domestic violence and remind everyone that it is a crime and that it is unacceptable behavior.  Freedom from the fear of violence at home is, and always should be, a basic human right.”

THE JOY OF HATE: SOCIAL MEDIA ROLE IN SPREADING RACIAL HATRED ACROSS AMERICA

Hits: 333

WPCNR THE LETTER TICKER. From the Center for Democracy & Technology. October 2, 2024:

I wanted to flag for you that the Center for Democracy & Technology (CDT) just released new research exploring the prevalence of online violence on X (Twitter) targeting women of color political candidates in the 2024 U.S. elections.

The research finds that:

  • More than 1 in 5 tweets targeted at Asian-American and African-American women candidates contained offensive language about the candidate.
  • African-American women candidates are targeted with significantly more hate speech than other groups: 5 times more than Latinx women; 4 times more than Asian-American women; 3 times more than white women; and 18 times more than white men.
  • The proportion of race- and gender-based hate speech targeted at women candidates differs by party affiliation.
  • The proportion of hate speech and offensive speech targeted toward Kamala Harris is less than that for Congressional women of color candidates.

The research is a follow-up to a study we conducted in 2022, which found that women of color Congressional candidates in the 2020 U.S. election were more likely to be subjected to violent and sexist abuse, and mis- and disinformation, compared to other candidates.

The study was conducted by the Online Violence Against Women in Politics Working Group at the Ford Institute for Human Security at the University of Pittsburgh, the Politus Project, and the Center for Democracy & Technology (CDT).

Elizabeth

Sept 30–The Best Ball Player I Ever Saw Has Gone to the Heavenly Hall of Fame

Hits: 427

Pete Rose leading off for the Reds in Wrigley Field June 1975

WPCNR VIEW FROM THE UPPER DECK. By “Bull Allen”. September 30, 2024:

His nickname was the greatest nickname a ballplayer could ever hope to have:

“Charlie Hustle.”

Pete Rose played hard all the time.

He is the player who leads all of the thousands of major league players in number of games played: 3,562 in 24 seasons.

Hit .303 lifetime  in 14,053 trips to the plate.

Pete rifled out 4,256 hits, the most lifetime hits of any major leaguer who ever played.

Today he was finally inducted into the Heavenly Hall of Fame up yonder.

He dove head first into Third Base, his trademark, a spectacular sight. Players faster than he get thrown out trying head firsters  today but it was Pete’s extra effort superb feel for the game, the situation and his going airborne at the shortstop

No catcher ever blocked the plate on him because he bowled you over like he did Ray Fosse in the All Star Game, very unfortunate, but that is the way he played the game.

He was the unquestionable leader of the Big Red Machine the last dynasty of baseball in the early Griffey Morgan  Bench, Perez Days.

I remember when he got that name, “Charlie Hustle.”

It was in spring training in 1963. Whitey Ford and Mickey Mantle were watching the Reds  batting. A kid named Pete Rose was hitting and he drew a walk and ran to first base, top speed.

Whitey turned to Mickey and  grinning, crooking his thumb said to Mantle, “Charlie Hustle.”

The name stuck because he hustled all the time.

He was a throwback to Pepper Martin of the old “Gashouse Gang” St. Louis Cardinals and the great Redbird great Enos Slaughter, another hustler.

He was also the toughest player I ever saw. To my memory, Pete Rose never was on the disabled list.

My old scorecard with the legendary Cincinnati Reds line up in 1975 Pete is in the leadoff spot. He has grounded to 2nd and walked his second time up.

The last time I saw him play was in 1975 in Chicago at Wrigley field. He always hit leadoff, and often drew a walk raced to first base at top speed and sometimes kept on going to second base. If the catcher lazily tossed the ball back to the pitcher Rose was half way to second.

He was as intimidating as the great leadoff hitters, Wills, Henderson, Rivers, but he could also hit with power. Always took the extra base. Hit according to the situation on the bases.  He was a menace to face, bat cocked behind his ear a coil of energy. You never wanted Pete Rose to lead off an inning when you had a lead.

Pete Rose played 3rd base. 1st base. second base, third base and the outfield. He could play anywhere and he hit and bunt. He was the complete ballplayer.

He was smart. He managed the Philadelphia Phillies in 1980 to their first World Championship as Player-Manager and hit himself in the leadoff spot, where he hit .331 in 160 games. Pete inspired players by example. After he was traded from Cincinnati after the 1979, the Reds have not won another World Series.

Pete Rose was affable, a great interview, and never belittled opponents or bragged. He was baseball for 24 years.

When he was found to be betting on his own team, he was banned from baseball. Could not be employed by any team in baseball. Swallowing his pride a number of times he asked baseball to reconsider. The baseball writers and major league baseball never did.

I found it ironic today watching the score of the Braves Mets double header how betting is ok with major league baseball now, except players still cannot bet. I was shocked by “what if” bets you could place via cellphone  on the Bleacher Report on outcome probabilities of today’s game on the Draft Kings betting ap.

I cannot think of how many players cheated their ways to pennants in 1951 and most recently the Houston Astros. No results have been overturned by major league baseball, no plaques of cheaters  removed from the faux “Hall of Fame.”

Cooperstown  stopped being the Hall of Fame when they would not forgive Pete Rose and denied him his entry as baseball’s all time hit leader and games played.

Pete’s death today is finally his induction  to the Heavenly Hall of Fame. At last

The Babe, The Iron Horse, Rabbit Maranville, Richie Ashburn,Chuck Klein, Grover Cleveland Alexander Mike Schmidt (four former Phillies), Pepper Martin, Phil Rizzuto, Jackie Robinson, The Duke, Big Newk, The Grey Eagle (Tris Speaker), Catfish Hunter are greeting him, with Shoeless Joe Jackson (member of Black Sox, banned for life for allegedly betting)and host of immortals playing in the Heavenly Leagues, cheers all around wearing their HHF blazers.

t

The Old Crosley Field, 1961 where Pete started his  career (note incline at left wall and the Heirloom Beer Sign). Their is a statue of Pete head-first sliding into base at  the present Reds stadium. I miss the old parks.

A formal reception honoring Pete is being held tonight in the Heavenly Old Crosley Field where the Heavenly Reds play with its Sundeck, “Moondeck” at night  its incline in leftfield  and the Ohio River flowing by. Pete, who grew up in Cincinnati and played in that field will know he is in Heaven

Charlie Hustle has always been in the Hall of Fame in my book to  me and his fans. He, despite what  major league baseball did to him after all he did for baseball is now in the only Hall of Fame that matters— the one in our memories when Pete Rose and The Big Red Machine came to town.

Thank you Pete. We always loved you.

Looking in to homeplate  of a model of  Crosley Field where Pete Rose held court.

WHITE PLAINS TRAFFIC SURVEY SURFACES –OBSERVATIONS

Hits: 418

WPCNR THE LETTER TICKER SEPTEMBER 25, 2024:

Dear Common Council Members,

We just stumbled upon this WP Traffic Survey:

We don’t recall receiving a request to participate in this Traffic Survey. . .however since one of our daughters was hit by an aggressive driver last year while walking by the Firehouse on Old Mamaroneck, we felt we had a personal obligation to provide our thoughts on Traffic Safety in WP.  While we have enjoyed living here for the past 45 years. . .we have to say driving in WP right now is a lot more dangerous, particularly since the end of the Covid shutdowns.

We filled out the Traffic Survey although the questions appear to be more boiler-plate than reflective of current WP Traffic situations.  And we included our below comments in the Survey:

“The lower 25 MPH speed limit will help Traffic Safety. . .however most of the cut-thru drvers from other communities are not aware of our new 25 MPR limit.

For instance, Burke Rehabilitation, which has a 15 MPH limit on its own campus, has employees traveling at excessive speeds on Heatherbloom Road where there are no sidewalks.  So, the City needs to put electronic speed displays on all the cut-thru residential roads to improve driver communication and citizen safety.

And at high-accident prone intersections increase the number of electronic displays for pedestrian protection in residential areas to the same level as in the Downtown.

Also, the City should consider developing a simple list of “driving instructions” for the many distracted & aggressive drivers and for people who have never taken formal driving instructions. . .so they can actually learn to stop at stop signs and crosswalks. . .always use their turn signals when turning. . .and stop making U-turns over double-yellow lines, particularly on Mamaroneck Ave.

Youth bicycling on certain streets at certain times is dangerous and should be discouraged, not encouraged.  And the City should consider regulating electric bikes and scooters which right now can be a menace to drivers, pedestrians and the riders themselves”.

For us Traffic Safety improvements always seem to be a “more-talk and less-action” topic.
For example, the high-risk intersection of Mamaroneck Ave and Heatherbloom Road right now has essentially the same layout as it had when we moved to WP 45 years ago. . .despite a significant number of accidents over the years.  Also, local drivers at this intersection have been adversely impacted by the increase of large trucks, some with self-centered drivers, traveling to and from the City dump and construction sites.
We ask our elected officials to put a high priority on Traffic Safety right now in our City in order to prevent future injuries and deaths.
And don’t treat the residential neighborhoods as second-class citizens compared to the Downtown area as far as the use of Traffic technological upgrades and improvements.
We also ask that the City should do more to encourage additional citizens to give their thoughts and comments on the Traffic Survey because the more bottom-up comments and information you have the more accurate the Survey results will be for real Traffic Safety.

Thank you,

Marie and Ron Rhodes

SEPT 24–WHITE PLAINS STICKS WITH SUSTAINABLE WESTCHESTER 100% RENEWABLE ENERGY PROGRAM NEW FIXED PRICE: 13.3 CENTS/KWH

Hits: 511

TO CHOOSE A LOWER RATE YOU MUST OPT-0UT BY MAILING IN OPT-OUT FORM OR CALLING SUSTAINABLE WESTCHESTER  PRIOR TO OCTOBER 20,2024.

WPCNR THE 2025 POWER STORY. By John F. Bailey.  September 24, 2024:

The City of White Plains informed residents and businesses in White Plains in a letter yesterday it has decided to continue membership in the Sustainable Westchester Community Choice Aggregation Program and would continue to make 100% renewable energy the city choice of electric power.

To choose the lower rate for Con Edison Standard Electric Supply, Small-Commercial and Residential Customers or the 50% Renewable Supply, customers must “opt-out” by the Opt-Out Card provided in the comunication or telephoning Sustainable Westchester at

914-242-4725 Ext. 111 or do so online or choose a different option at

www.sustainablewestchester.org/wp/con-ed-area-pre-enroll.

The new  Residential Rates in effect through November 30, 2025.

100% Renewable Energy Rate is 13.298 cents per kilowatt hour  (down from 15.06 cents current rate)

50% Renewable Energy Rate is 12.178 per Kilowatt hour.

The Con Edison Standard Electric Supply Rate is 9.6 Cents per Kilowatt Hour

The Small-Commercial business property

Has the same 100% and 50% Renewable rates as Residential Customers have choice of but pays slightly less for the Con Edison Standard Electric Supply: 8.734 cents per KWH.

The city letter notes

“Con Edison supply pricing is variable and may change each month, the Sustainable Westchester Constellation New Energy Inc pricing is fixed for the contract period”(and WPCNR points out avoids demand fluctuation swings during the summer months energy demands in the summer).

SEPT 23–COVID CASES GROW THROUGHOUT REGION. 6 COUNTIES IN MID HUDSON REGION OUTPACE WESTCHESTER IN CASES FIRST TIME ALL YEAR

Hits: 416

NEW CASES “LIGHT” BUT THERE ARE A LOT OUT THERE: NYC: 10,057 CASES. LONG ISLAND 5,714 FROM SEPT 1 THROUGH 19.

WPCNR COVID SURVEILLANCE. Statistics from NY Covid Tracker. Observation and Analysis By John F.Bailey

The Mid-Hudson region of Westchester,Rockland, Orange, Putnam Dutchess, Ulster and Sullivan Counties, according to today’s new case statistics from the New York Covid Tracker has seen 4,917 new cases of covid reported through September 19.

Westchester County recorded 1,770 of the 7 counties new cases of 4.917 and the other 6 counties, 3,147 marking the first time all year the 6 counties other than Westchester County have surpassed Westchester in new case spread.

Westchester through last Thursday appears headed for a  third consecutive week of a rise in cases. Our County is seeing 10.4 persons per 100,000 persons a day on average the last 7 days. Multiply that by the County population of 1,004,000  by 10.04 100,000 segments it works out to 105 new cases a day, 730 a week , and a possible 2,924 cases for the month of September which at 3 weeks through the month  trails the September 2023 total new cases of 4,956 .

Unfortunately in the last 10 days of September 2023,  cases exploded to 1,621 cases, or 162 a day with schools opening social factors, you name it. If Westchester sees socialization and school spreads and the socializations coming up and we hit 162 a  day that means about 1,600 more cases or  4,544 cases this September very close to last September’s total of  4.956. which resulted in  those infected people spreading to 2, 174 in all  of October.

On November of 2023 the September October cases created 3,356 new cases during November setting the stage for  6,916 new cases in December.

The rise in cases in the Mid Hudson region the last 3 weeks is disturbing, especially since Westchester new cases were less the other 6 counties.

The rest of the New York Metropolitan area: all 5 boroughs of New York City are seeing steady rise the first 20 days of September.

New York City including Staten Island, Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx totaled 10,057 new cases, 529 a day.

Long Island  is ahead of the entire Mid-Hudson Region with 5,714 new cases the first 19 days of September 301 new cases a day.

Physicians say they are not seeing as many serious cases of covid.

However we are seeing a less than healthy populace mingling out there.

Westchester County will mostly likely see by the weekend a third straight week of an increase in covid cases, which will make it the 26th week in the 35 weeks of this whole year where cases of covid have gone up. The stat I do not like is how fast the cases are found on the Monday Tuesday and Wednesday following the weekend.

For a local perspective, White Plains Hospital continues to have 50% of patients admitted for procedures test positive for covid. Since Auguust 30, of 135 patients admitted, 67 or 50% have been found to have covid.

Will the fall of 2023 repeat and close out 2024 with a very covid heavy December?

That’s what these numbers in the city, Long Island and the Mid-Hudson Region tell me.
