WPCNR RINGSIDE. By Johnny Cannon. October 12, 2006 UPDATED WITH MORE BOXING ACTION IN PICTURES  9:00 A.M. E.D.T.: Joey Gilbert, erstwhile of The Bronx and of “Contender” fame, threw a right hand solidly to the left jaw of Keith Sims on the far ropes  midway through the 6th round last night, knocking Sims staggering across the ring to the left ropes and dropping him to the canvas ending their NABO Middleweight title fight at 1:57 of the sixth round on a TKO in the Main Event at the County Center. Gilbert dominated Sims inside with sharp jolting left jabs to the face and hard up from the floor, right hand slams to the solarplexus, softening him up, retaining his Middleweight crown, dominating all the way.

Joey Gilbert in green trunks has just clobbered Keith Sims with a haymaker of a right. Sims is about to hit the ropes and sink to the canvas ending their Middleweight title clash in the sixth round. It was a rousing climax to Star Boxing’s Pugilistic Extravaganza at the County Center last night. 7 Fights, 5 hours of boxing. Photo, WPCNR Sports.

Kaboom! Terry Cauthen “The Heat” in the black trunks, jolts Dante “The Inferno” Craig 11 seconds into the 10th round with a right cross up and solid to the jaw…it sent Craig lunging into the left corner where the referee stopped the fight. Cauthen’s speedy 1-2s had softened Craig up, driving him around the ring in the 9th, and Terry finished him off with this crushing right. Photo, WPCNR Sports.

Terry Cauthen of Trenton seized the USBA Junior Middleweight title from Dante Craig of Cincinnati, outboxing, outpunching the slower Craig consistently scoring a TKO at 11 seconds of the 10th round after a hurricane of punches softened Craig up in the 9th round.

Elvir Muriqi of the Bronx, “The Kosovo Kid” in the red trunks, kept ducking under Teddy Muller’s overhand rights, punishing the puncher from Moline, Illinois with combinations inside to the head, opening a cut on Muller’s right eye in the 3rd round and a cut on the left eye in the sixth. Muriqi pounded Muller and scored a unanimous 8-round decision, much to the chanting delight of his fans from Da Bronx. This right cross was delivered late in the fight. Photo, WPCNR Sports.

“The Heat,” Terry Cauthen’s combinations delivered staccato style through his 10 Round Rumble with Craig kept “The Inferno” in peek-a-boo mode. Josh Snyder, (2-1, 1 KO) “The Berlin Bomber” of Berlin, Maryland  in black trunks came into the County Center, dominating Dex Pejcinivic (2-3, 1 KO) of The Bronx, who tired early in a unanimous 4-Round decision, hurting him with a solid right and left in Round 2 and landing blows at will in Round 4. Roberto Benitez  of Ocala Florida (5-0) remained undefeated. His combinations delivered with lightning, cut-em up decision, got after and surprised “The Shiek,” Vin Rungea (1-4-1) from Queens in Round 1 knocking Vinnie to the canvas with a pulvering right cross he never saw, followed with a punishing left hook. Benitez opened a huge cut over The Shiek’s left eye in the 3rd stanza. The Shiek showed great heart hanging in all the way and getting some shots in at the speedier nimbler Benitez. Both fighters got a huge hand from the crowd in Benitez 4-Round unanimous decision. Brooklyn’s Khabier Suleymanov in the blue trunks won his first professional fight, Bantam Division, working Omar Carroll of Philly over on the ropes in Round One. Carroll was on the defensive the entire fight. Photo, WPCNR Sports.

Star Boxing’s debut card at the County Center delivered an entertaining 7-Fight Extravaganza for the crowd that made its way to the WCC on a “Dracula Night,” with the largest applause and interest reserved for Elvir Muriqi in his bout with Teddy Muller. Shouts of “Muu REE KEY” “MUU REE KEY” thundered from the balcony as “The Kosovo Kid” from The Bronx deftly parried Muller’s haymakers.

The title bout between the two Olympians, Terry Cauthen (1996)and Dante Craig (2000) was the best fight of the night, with Cauthen’s swift 1-2s, superior boxing and power inside work systematically wore down the deft defender Craig who could not take the offensive. Cauthen, superbly conditioned stepped up the pressure relentlessly tattooing Craig in the 9th Round, hurting him with flurries of punches Craig could not ward off. Craig never recovered from the pummeling in the 9th Round, taking a shot to the left jaw sending him to his knees in the near corner, when the fight was stopped.  Cauthen, overwhelmed with his achievement fell to the canvas with emotion.

Joey Gilbert’s Middleweight Title defense found “The Contender” star in control all the way, getting inside on Keith Sims –poking Sims with his jab and delivering body blows to the abdomen that Sims could not handle. Gilbert started taking Sims apart in Round 2 with 2 merciless rights inside. Jabbed him incessantly in the 3rd Round and delivered a hard right in the far corner the 4th round where he was able to follow Sims around the ring delivering collateral damage. Shot after shot to the body followed in the 5th.

WPCNR MAIN STREET JOURNAL. October 11, 2006: The Reverend Janet Vincent is leaving her calling at Grace Church in White Plains to become  Rector of St. Columba’s Parish in Washington, D.C.

Reverend Janet Vincent, longtime White Plains personality, shown in an interview December, 2004, at the time when Louis Cappelli announced his $1 Million contribution “in kind” towards the renovation of the Parish Hall.  The Grace Church was in delicate negotiations with renewing their rent contract with Westchester County on whether or not to continue their Samaritan House/ Open Arms services. Thanks, in part,  to Mr. Cappelli’s contribution, and a reported donation from Mr. Cappelli, the church was enabled to continue their social services to the homeless with a new $599,200 contract with the county. Photo Capture, WPCNR News Archive.

Upon Further Review: Walgreen’s Proposal Turned Over to Common Council.

Hits: 0

WPCNR SOUTH END TIMES. By John F. Bailey. October 10, 2006: The decision as to whether Walgreen’s will be allowed to occupy the former Sports Page site on Mamaroneck road has been taken away from the Planning Board and given to the Common Council. The move comes after unprecedented Rosedale neighborhood protest to the city administration over the last two weeks on the matter.

1205 Mamaroneck Avenue, site of former Sports Page Restaurant. Planning, Law and Building switched jurisdictions and declared the Common Council the official approving agency on the Walgreen’s proposal in a letter to the Rosedale Residents Assocation Friday. Photo, WPCNR News.

The Building, Planning and Law Departments after further review of the Walgreen’s proposal to build a Walgreen’s outlet on the site of the old Sports Page Restaurant, have determined the matter is a Special S Zone Amendment which places the Walgreen’s matter under the jurisdiction of the Common Council, not The Planning Board.

The decision, comes about from the intervention by Mayor Joseph Delfino based on the Mayor’s recollection of previous matters involving the property according to a letter from the Commissioner of Planning  to the Planning Board.

The 10-page letter from Susan Habel  is dated October 6. The letter finds extensive fault with the preliminary proposal by Walgreen’s, including:

* The store footprint intrudes on former lots

* The landscaping on Dale Street has not been preserved

* The parking area is not enhanced and screened

* Unacceptable treatment of the steep slope in the rear of the property;

*  The Planning Department does not accept a fence on the top of the concrete retaining wall at the rear

* The Department of Planning spells out certain conditions that a B-2 business at this part of Mamaroneck Avenue has to meet, among them, “limiting the resuse of existing buildings and any expansion of existing uses within these neighborhood business areas to primarily neighborhood oriented uses,” and “ensure that all changes to and redevelopment of existing neighborhood business uses include adequatre off street customer and employee parking to prevent spill over of commercial parking into the abutting residential areas.”

The letter also states, “The Planning department finds that the informal application does not meet the requirements of the S Zone District,” and therefore it requires an amendment to the ordinance which can only be granted by the Common Council.

Good Old Ebersole Rink Opens Friday Morning for the Season. Skating Lessons, Hoc

Hits: 0

WPCNR SPORTS. October 10, 2006: Ebersole Ice Rink will open with public sessions at 10 AM to 2, 3 to 5 and 8 to 10 P.M. Friday to start the 2006-2007 skating season in White Plains. Figure Skating classes are scheduled for children of all ages. Learn more about Ebersole ice skating lessons at the Ebersole Figure Skating School, under the direction of Kristen Fuerst, by going to www.skatinginstructor.com , or call the rink at 422-1348 or  White Plains Department of Recreation and Parks at 422-1336.

WELCOME, ICE PRINCESSES. Kristen Fuerst, Skating School Director, Ebersole Rink. Photo, WPCNR Sports

Ebersole features hockey programs,(White Plains Plainsmen at www.whiteplainsplainsmen.com) and the prestigious White Plains Figure Skating Club. The skating school produces two shows during the year the Christmas Show and the Spring Figure Skating Show featuring the skaters in all ice classes, plus soloists from the figure skating club.

Ebersole Rink Skating Lessons in Action at Ebersole Rink. October 2005. Photo, WPCNR Sports Archive

Many of the skaters who learn to skate at Ebersole Rink at  4 years of age skate at “The Eb” for  years, and perfect their skills. It’s “their place,” and they achieve a high level of performance and great relationships with the dedicated, friendly instructors.

A Test Session last year, sponsored by the White Plains Figure Skating Club and saw 13 skaters test at 16  test levels. Of the candidates skating their Axels, Spirals, Sit Spins, Camel Spins, Flips, Salkows, Bielmans and Mohawks (among other skating maneuvers, fans), all 13 skaters each passed at least one test, and there were only two failed tests.

Yvette Salonger reported in a previous White Plains CNR article, that  the White Plains Figure Skating Club currently has 34 young women as members, with three skaters currently at the senior moves level. The club (whose members get to wear the coveted black  “White Plains Figure Skating Club” jacket) buys its own ice time from the rink on Tuesdays, Fridays and Sunday afternoons. The club creates a camaraderie between the younger skaters and the older skaters, whom they all look up to.

When Juliana Bailey, my daughter, was a young skater she idolized the older figure skaters in the club and they treated her very nicely. Now she has inherited that role. It is one of the wonderful traditions at the Ebersole Rink, like the Pecks who run the figure skate concession, the skating guards, then there’s  Rose and Matt Hanson, the Manager. They know all the kids and treat them well.

Older skaters set the standards and the younger skaters grow up to fill their skates. Ebersole Rink is like an old pair of broken-in skates –a lot of great jumps left in them — and a lot of memories etched by steel blades that trace precise circles on the ice of your heart forever.
