White Plains to Delay Tickets for Expired Vehicle Registration & Inspection

Drivers will instead receive a warning in first 15 days after expiration

White Plains, NY – September 1, 2026. The City of White Plains and the Department of Parking are implementing a new 15-day warning period for expired vehicle registrations and inspections. Under the new policy, vehicle owners will receive a warning informing them that their registration or inspection sticker has expired. A ticket will not be issued until the expiration is more than 15 days old.

“With everything happening in our lives, sometimes vehicle inspection and registration deadlines sneak up on you, and it can be difficult to stay on top of renewals,” said Mayor Justin Brasch. “The new warning period gives drivers a chance to renew before receiving a ticket. We want to make the renewal process a little easier for people in White Plains.”

This policy change comes just one month after White Plains expanded the parking grace period at all municipal spaces. With both initiatives, city officials aim to reduce unexpected expenses and fines providing motorists with extra time and flexibility before a penalty.

The new 15-day warning period gives motorists an opportunity to renew. However once the 15 days have elapsed, standard enforcement will resume. The warning policy excludes expirations discovered during White Plains Police Department traffic stops, but does apply to all parked vehicles.

On average, White Plains Parking & Code Enforcement issues approximately 9,000 citations annually for expired vehicle registrations and 12,000 citations for expired vehicle inspections. More than 50% of inspection citations are issued within the first 15 days after expiration. Under the new policy, thousands of drivers will now receive a warning instead of a ticket, giving them ample time to get valid stickers.

In New York, the fine for an expired inspection ranges from $25 to $50, plus a state surcharge. The fine for an expired registration ranges from $40 to $75, plus a state surcharge. Penalties increase substantially when either has been expired for more than 60 days.

Car and truck registrations must be renewed every two years with a valid registration sticker displayed on the windshield. Renewals can be completed at a DMV office, by mail, or online at https://dmv.ny.gov/registration.

While waiting for the new registration sticker to arrive, drivers can print a temporary registration and display it next to the expired sticker.

All vehicles must undergo an annual inspection. Drivers may be ticketed for an expired inspection or for failing to display a valid inspection sticker on the windshield. For a list of locations certified to perform inspections in New York, go to https://dmv.ny.gov/inspections.

Inspection stickers expire on the last day of the month printed on the sticker, while registrations expire on a specific date that may fall earlier in the month. Drivers can confirm both expiration dates through the New York State DMV website.

The DMV allows users to sign up for text or email reminders about upcoming registration and inspection expirations. Renewal reminders are sent more than six weeks before expiration dates.
