WESTCHESTER STILL OVER 3,000. COVID INFECTIONS FRIDAY–539. COULD BE FIRST TIME IN 7 WEEKS WESTCHESTER HAS NOT INCREASED INFECTIONS

Hits: 1073

THE WPCNR COVID LOGBOOK AND PRESS NOTES OF THE NEW YORK REGION INFECTIONS TRENDS FRIDAY.

WPCNR COVID DAILY. From NYS Covid Tracker. Observations & Analysis By John F. Bailey. May 22, 2022:

If Saturday Covid infections stay under 500 this will be the first time  in 7 weeks Westchester declines in new covid cases.

Meanwhile, New York City cases continue to rise at 4, 124 new cases a day.

Mid-Hudson counties other than Westchester continue on the rise with very limited testings being administererd.

Westchester reported 539 lab covid positives Friday on 5,704 tests a 9.5% infection rate. Orange County reported 209 on 2,302 tests (7.9% infections). Dutchess now lead Rockland County in new infections with 165 positives on 1,864 tests (9.2%), Rockland declined to 124 positives of 1,452 tests (7.9%). Putnam county, long least in fections moved up finding  51 positives in 505 tests a 10.7% infection rate. Ulster had 50, Sullivan 32.

The Mid-Hudson Region testest 13,407 Friday and had 1,171 people test positive—a 9% Positive Rate.

Reports on the 100,000  per continues to show how inept that rate us for the public to understand the rate of positives. You need to know the total population New York City Boroughs and each county to figure how many per day really you have.

On the other hand, with no mandated testing, only volunteer testing, the public is lead to believe that infections on low quanties “really aren’t so bad.”

This conflict of policies and providing results based on past how many more infections in the past we had compared to now, and breaking down positives into 100,000 population segments may be snazzy statistics (“Look mom, I know the populations of counties and can divide and multiply by 100,000 segments) is just a matter of  giving high numbers in a way that makes the infections appear low.

The result is it has made people confident the disease is down when it is way up.

New York City in “Lab tests” is infecting at 4,124 a day, that is 28,000 a week and next week that should hit 35,000. That is not good.

The Center for Disease Control in a series of  press releases yesterday, now says by their own convoluted statistics that New York City is way up in hospitalizations and that the new variant of the day discovered is way more contagious.

This after a month of this new 100,000 population moving average  giving without the latest census figures. Now they say we’re “up” and need to mask indoors, and out.

There obviously is a need to test more in the schools, hot beds of spread.  (Officials are reluctant to do this.)

CDC consistently changing its mind on directives and trends has created a sense of recklessness by the public,  an “I’ll do what I want” attitude and  “make your own decision culture” of “coexistence with covid,” giving the latest renegade variants invitations to infect.

GREENBURGH TOWN SUPERVISOR REGRETS MONDAIRE JONES WILL NO LONGER REPRESENT GREENBURGH

Hits: 753

WPCNR THE LETTER TICKER. May 21, 2022:

To the Editor:

  I was disappointed to learn that Congressman Mondaire Jones will no longer represent Greenburgh in the United States Congress.

Thanks to redistricting, the Congressman has decided to run for his Congressional seat in a new district in NYC.

  Congressman Jones was an exceptional Representative who worked hard for our district.

Besides fighting for progressive values – the Congressman helped the town of Greenburgh receive a one million dollar grant from the federal government to build a new sidewalk on Dobbs Ferry Road, an initiative that will make walking safer for pedestrians and residents who don’t have cars. We asked the Congressman for help and Congressman Jones not only tried. He succeeded in helping our community.

  During the Afghanistant crisis last year, the Congressman’s office did an amazing job helping a refugee I was trying to help escape the Taliban.

Unlike many elected officials who go thru the motions  making you think they are helping the Congressman did much more.

The Congressman’s office was in constant  contact with a military liaison who stayed in touch with the woman trying to escape -until she was on the plane in Kabul.

Thanks to the Congressman’s staff a second chance in life was given to the cousin of an Ossining resident who was escaping the Taliban.

  Congressman Jones has fought hard for infrastructure funding which is helping local governments. He has fought hard for progressive initiatives from health care reforms, helping the hungry and fighting to change Washington, bringing people together.

  I hope that Congressman Jones is successful in winning election to the Congress in a new district. I will be happy to spread the word to NYC residents who might not be familiar with what an excellent public servant the Congressman is.

PAUL FEINER
Greenburgh Town Supervisor

THEN ALONG CAME JONES! TALL THIN JONES! MONDAIRE JONES WILL OPPOSE BILL DE BLASIO IN NEW YORK’S 10TH DISTRICT PRIMARY IN AUGUST. MONDAIRE JONES DECLARES CANDIDACY FOR NEWLY REDRAWN & “JUDGE-APPROVED” 10TH CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT IN LOWER MANHATTAN & BROOKLYN. JUDGE APPROVES REDRAWN CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICTS AS OF LAST NIGHT AT MIDNIGHT

MONDAIRE JONES CONGRESSMAN
(SECOND FROM RIGHT) WITH MAYOR TOM ROACH (FAR RIGHT}

AND SENATOR KIRSTEN GILLIBRAND (FAR LEFT)
PRESENTING $640,000 TO THE YWPCA IN WHITE PLAINS ,

Today, U.S. Representative Mondaire Jones (D-N.Y.) announced his reelection campaign for New York’s newly redrawn 10th Congressional District in New York City.

The new NY-10 includes parts of the East and West Village of Manhattan, “Brownstone Brooklyn”, Bourough Park. Former Mayor of New York City Bill de Blasio announced Friday he would run for the new District 10 seat because it “has no incumbent.” Now with Mondaire Jones coming into the contest, Mr. de Blasio has one.

Congressman Jones announced this morning.

The Washington Post reported that Judge Patrick McAllister approved the NY congressional and State Senate maps redrawn districts at midnight last night following along the lines redrawn by Carnegie-Mellon University (Pittsburgh,Pa) fellow Jonathan Cervas and presented last Monday

The Washington Post article this morning quoted the five-page order by Justice McAllister declaring the new boundaries “almost perfectly neutral” 15 safe Democratic seats, three safe Republican seats and eight competitive seats.

Congressman Jones in his announcement for the 10th district statement wrote:

“The final congressional maps were the result of partisan politics – drawn by an out-of-state, Republican court appointee who has shown utter disregard for cultural, social, and economic communities of interest. It is designed to reduce the number of Democrats serving New Yorkers in Congress. I have decided to run for another term in Congress in NY-10 to help Democrats maintain their representation in Congress.  “

New York’s 10th District is the birthplace of the LGBTQ+ rights movement. Since long before the Stonewall Uprising, queer people of color have sought refuge within its borders. I was proud to be elected as one of the first openly gay, Black members of Congress and I’m excited to make my case for why I’m the right person to lead this district forward and to continue my work in Congress to save our democracy from the threats of the far right. “

I helped pass the American Rescue Plan, and the Infrastructure, Investment and Jobs Act to deliver critical investments in infrastructure for New York City. I have also worked to increase affordable housing and have led the fight to protect the rights of LGBTQ+ individuals and women. I look forward to championing the needs of the 10th District in Congress.”

The Congressional Primary Date is set for August 23, giving Jones and de Blasio plenty of time to acquire signatures if needed. It is unclear if they need to do that. It is also not a requirement that the persons running for the New District 10 need to reside in the district.

Congressman Jones sits on the House Committees on the Judiciary, Education and Labor, and Ethics. He is vice chair of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Courts, Intellectual Property, and the Internet where he has led the fight to expand the Supreme Court through his Judiciary Act. As a staunch advocate for democracy reform and voting rights, Congressman Jones co-authored and helped pass the Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Act in the House. He has authored and championed proposals for universal child care and lowering costs for working families through antitrust legislation. Recently, Congressman Jones delivered $8.2 million in community project funding for his constituents.

COUNTY ADVISORY DURING BABY FORMULA SHORTAGE

Hits: 3831

 WPCNR HEALTH ADVISORY. From the Westchester County Department of Health. May 20, 2022:

The Westchester County Health Department is urging residents to never dilute/water down infant formula in an attempt to extend their supply, try to make formula at home, or use milk or toddler formula to feed infants. While the FDA has announced plans to ease the national shortage of baby formula, it will take at least another six to eight weeks before an ample supply of formula is available on store shelves again.

Westchester County Department of Health Commissioner Dr. Sherlita Amler said: “I particularly caution parents that while it may be tempting to water down formula to stretch it out, it is not safe to do so. This practice can have severe consequences beyond malnourishment. As a pediatrician, I have personally seen an infant who suffered seizures due to an electrolyte imbalance caused by diluted infant formula.”

The Federal Government has issued the following links on their webpage to help families feed their babies:

Manufacturer Hotlines:

  • Gerber’s MyGerber Baby Expert : reach a certified nutrition or lactation consultant by phone, text, Facebook Messenger, web chat, or video call, who can help you identify a similar formula that may be more readily available.
  • Abbott’s Consumer Hotline: call 1-800-986-8540
  • Abbott’s urgent product request line : ask your OBGYN or your infant’s pediatrician to submit an urgent product request by downloading and completing the form – PDF
  • Reckitt’s Customer Service Line: call 1-800 BABY-123 (222-9123)

Community Resources

  • Locate your nearest Community Action Agency (CAA) . Your neighborhood CAA may be able to provide you with formula or connect you with local agencies that have formula in stock.
  • United Way’s 2-1-1 : dial 2–1-1 to be connected to a community resource specialist affiliated with United Way who may be able to help you identify food pantries and other charitable sources of local infant formula and baby food.
  • Feeding America : call your local food bank to ask whether they have infant formula and other supplies in stock.
  • Human Milk Banking Association of North America  (HMBANA): certain HMBANA-accredited milk banks are distributing donated breast milk to mothers in need; please note that some may require a prescription from a medical professional. Find an HMBANA-accredited milk bank .

WIC-Eligible Families

  • Contact your local WIC  office to identify or obtain additional sources of infant formula nearby.

General Guidance

  • Call your OBGYN or pediatrician to see if they have in-office samples or can suggest a similar formula that may be more readily available in stores and is nutritionally similar to your infant’s typical formula.
  • You should not water down formula, try to make formula at home, or use toddler formula to feed infants. Don’t discard formula unless it is expired or is part of the recall. Check your formula’s lot code  to see whether or not it was affected by the recall.
  • You can find more guidance from the American Academy of Pediatrics .

Additionally, locally the Health Department is notifying the public about the New York Milk Bank in Valhalla. The New York Milk Bank is the first comprehensive nonprofit milk bank based in New York State where breast milk is collected from carefully screened donors, pasteurized and distributed to infants in need. Women looking to donate breast milk can also reach out to the New York Milk Bank to provide excess breast milk to babies in need.

Clients of the Health Department’s WIC Program should contact their WIC clinic for support if their grocery store is out of their WIC infant formula. Yonkers WIC clients should call (914) 231-2510 and
Port Chester WIC clients should call (914) 813-7244.

The Department of Health will continue to monitor the situation and communicate with families. For more information, support and WIC eligibility, visit the Health Department’s website at https://health.westchestergov.com/

COUNTY POLICE MAKE PROGRESS IN CONTROLLING FENTANYL DISTRIBUTION IN WESTCHESTER

Hits: 357

Narcotics Reduction Program targeted large-scale fentanyl suppliers, sought to address rising overdose deaths in Westchester

WPCNR POLICE GAZETTE. From the Westchester County Department of Communications. May 19, 2022:

Beginning in June 2020, in response to the opioid epidemic and a rising number of overdose deaths, Westchester County Police launched a Narcotics Reduction Program that targeted large-scale suppliers of fentanyl and other illegal narcotics.

By leveraging the resources of the multi-agency Real Time Crime Center, collaborating with federal law enforcement partners, and utilizing precision policing strategies, the Narcotics Reduction Program has led to the seizure of significant quantities of fentanyl and fentanyl-laced pills and cocaine. Several dozen suspects have been charged by federal prosecutors with significant drug-trafficking crimes.

“Fentanyl is deadly, even in the smallest amounts. Its presence in a variety of illegal narcotics is a leading contributor to the overdose deaths we have seen in Westchester,” County Executive George Latimer said. “Reducing the flow of fentanyl into our County is literally a way we can save lives.”

Latimer said the County is focused on getting drug treatment to low-level drug offenders while targeting criminal investigations toward those who manufacture and distribute fentanyl and other narcotics in large quantities.

“Instead of investing time and effort arresting low-level users, most of whom would benefit more from treatment than incarceration, we have been able to leverage law enforcement intelligence and shared resources to directly target so-called ‘bigger fish,’ ” Latimer said.

Commissioner Thomas A. Gleason of the Westchester County Police said that the Narcotics Reduction Program utilizes investigators assigned to the Real Time Crime Center; detectives assigned to the County Police Narcotics Unit; federal agents from multiple agencies; and Patrol officers from the County Police Conditions Unit.

He said since June of 2020, investigators from the Real Time Crime Center have initiated narcotics cases that led to the seizure of:

·         453,422 bags of fentanyl packaged for individual sale;

·         94 kilograms of fentanyl packaged in bulk;

·         863 fentanyl pressed pills disguised as real prescription medication;

·         66 kilograms of cocaine;

·         41 vehicles equipped with aftermarket hidden compartments, and

·         27 firearms.

“Using cutting edge, precision-policing tactics that RTC has developed, as well as establishing a deliberate focus on inter-agency collaboration and intelligence sharing, the Narcotics Reduction Program has resulted in record breaking success,” Gleason said. “We would not be seeing these results without the invaluable assistance of our federal partners.”

Gleason thanked the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Drug Enforcement Administration, Department of Homeland Security and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York for its partnership in the Narcotics Reduction Program.

“Because Narcotics Reduction Program arrests are predominantly prosecuted at the federal level, and because one investigation is often connected to another, the County Police are not able to share the fruits of this program on a day-to-day basis,” Gleason said. “We wanted to provide this update to the public to ensure them that we are hard at work, and very successfully at work, in the effort to keep fentanyl out of our communities.”

Gleason noted that the County Police also continue to work collaboratively with local law enforcement and the Westchester County District Attorney’s Office on narcotics investigations.
