White Plains Hospital (WPH) opened the doors to its most significant campus addition to date Wednesday: the new Center for Advanced Medicine & Surgery (CAMS) – a 252,000-square-foot, nine-story outpatient center located at 122 Maple Avenue, at the corner of Maple and Longview avenues, in White Plains.

This facility features state-of-the-art operating rooms, endoscopy, ambulatory and procedure suites, wound care delivered through hyperbaric chambers, advanced imaging, non-invasive diagnostic testing and specialty physician offices.

CAMS is the largest dedicated outpatient facility for White Plains Hospital and one of the largest in Westchester County. Connecting to both the main Hospital and Center for Cancer Care, CAMS is the latest addition to the Hospital’s ongoing campus transformation, which included a new Center for Cancer Care, completed in 2016, and the Hospital’s new lobby, inpatient tower, and operating room renovation, completed in 2015. Since 2015, approximately 622,000 square feet have been renovated or added to the Hospital and its offsite locations.

“As the past year confirmed, having access to advanced care right here in our community is critical,” said Susan Fox, President and CEO of White Plains Hospital. “This new facility represents an important step forward in expanding access to comprehensive care delivered by top healthcare professionals in diverse specialties. It also furthers our commitment to enhancing the patient experience, providing the latest advancements in treatment and technology to better serve the needs of our community.”

The new Center for Advanced Medicine & Surgery will feature ambulatory surgery, endoscopy suites, wound care delivered through hyperbaric chambers, and cutting-edge imaging such as the first and only PET (positron emission tomography) MRI scan in Westchester. This technology provides a higher level of detailed views than traditional MRI, allowing for more precise diagnosis and treatment. The Center will also feature top physicians in such specialties including: Orthopedics; Urology; Pain Management; Ears, Nose and Throat; Thyroid; Colorectal; Vascular; Plastic; and Bariatric care; as well as a comprehensive new Heart and Vascular Program.

Dr. Philip Ozuah, President and CEO of Montefiore Medicine, added, “The new Center for Advanced Medicine & Surgery is a tremendous achievement. As a Health System, we are focused on advancing our long-held mission of providing exceptional care to our extended communities. White Plains Hospital has quickly become the tertiary hub for advanced care in the Hudson Valley.

Later this year, the cardiac surgery team from Montefiore will begin performing cardiac surgery at White Plains Hospital. This new facility will allow for local patient access to these surgeons, who will be working side by side with area physicians supporting a comprehensive cardiac program and represents just one more example of our commitment to providing local access to world-class physicians and advanced services.”

Features of the new Center for Advanced Medicine & Surgery include:

Enhanced Patient Experience:

The patient drop-off driveway is integrated into the building’s design, allowing for convenient drop off. Two pedestrian bridges will connect the outpatient facility to the main Hospital and the Longview Parking Garage for optimal convenience and seamless access.

Design and Construction:

The project was designed in accordance with the principles of sustainable construction to support energy efficiency, water efficiency, light pollution reduction, and indoor air quality. The project’s architect is Perkins-Eastman; the facility was built by Turner Construction; the structure utilizes 2,800 tons of steel and 1,100 glass curtain wall panels.

Smart Building Features: The building will feature a robust IT infrastructure designed to facilitate current and future medical technology and telemedicine. An intelligent infrastructure will support automatic building management, energy efficiency through technology and real-time data collection.

The move-in for departments and programs in CAMS will be in a phased approach beginning on June 7.

PLAYLAND JOBS THIS SUMMER

Hits: 415

Summer is just around the corner, and that means Playland Park in Rye will reopen and is staffing up with a virtual job fair.

County Executive George Latimer said: “As one of the largest employers of youth, this virtual job fair is an innovative way for us to staff the park. We typically hold this event in person at the County Center in White Plains. But because that site remains vital for vaccine distribution, we are proud to present this event in a new form for those looking for summer employment.”

Playland Park is seeking qualified candidates to fill ride operator, Kiddyland ride operator and custodial roles. Wages start at $14 per hour. Westchester County is an equal opportunity employer.

Commissioner of the Department of Parks, Recreation and Conservation Kathy O’Connor said: “I encourage those interested in summer employment to apply for a position to help us make summer 2021 a great season. Playland, Westchester County’s only amusement park, is enjoyed by people from the tristate area. Besides being a fun place to visit, Playland is also a fun place to work.”

Candidates will have the opportunity to view video descriptions and job specs. They will then be able to apply to their top three job choices. Qualified candidates will be contacted to schedule virtual interviews.

The job board can be accessed at https://playlandpark.org/work_at_playland/. Interviews will be held on Saturday, June 5.

OVER 100 REMEMBER WHITE PLAINS MEMORIAL DAY

Hits: 690

MAYOR TOM ROACH SET THE KEY NOTE THEME OF REVERENCE , ADMIRATION AND LOSS AT THIS MORNING’S WHITE PLAINS MEMORIAL DAY REMEMBERENCE.

White Plains Mayor Tom Roach,
in cooperation with the Mayor’s Veterans Committee observed the traditional of the City’s annual Memorial Day Commemoration this morning with a WPCNR estimiate of over 100 citizens, city uniformed personnel, and citizens and servicemen this morning. By far it was the most-attended observance this reporter has seen in 21 years. The crowd filled half of the Ebersole Rink.

The names of White Plains citizens who died in past wars, 9/11, and of covid-care providers were read aloud.

Mayor Roach said in his announcement , “Memorial Day remains as relevant today as when it was first enacted in memory of the soldiers who fought in the Civil War.  Great sacrifices are made every day by the men and women of the U.S. Armed Services.  Their sacrifices remind us anew to be grateful for all that we have as a community and a country.”

During the past year of tremendous upheaval and loss, we also remember the 12,000 recorded deaths of veterans from COVID-19.

Deceased honorees this year are Malcolm Baehr and Jack Collins. Both served on the Mayor’s Veterans Committee for many years.  They were incredibly proud of their time served in the armed forces and dedicated themselves to honoring all veterans respectfully in our community.

MONDAY’S WHITE PLAINS MEMORIAL DAY REMEMBRANCE WILL BE AT 11 AM IN DELFINO PARK.
THIS IS A SCENE FROM MEMORIAL DAY, MAY 29, 2016, WHEN THE TRADITIONAL MEMORIAL DAY PARADE WAS HELD IN WHITE PLAINS NY USA

WPCNR STARS AND STRIPES. Contributed by Carl Albanese. Originally published  by WPCNR May 30, 2011:

Editor’s Note: Memorial Day weekend is almost always distinguished by melancholy weather conditions. The Memorial Day Weekend weather this weekend continues that traditional a weekend where the weather reflects the tenor of the occasion. Carl Albanese of White Plains wrote this for WPCNR ten years ago. I publish it again with respect.)

Memorial Day is not about division. It is about reconciliation; it is about coming together to honor those who gave their all.

“Let no vandalism of avarice or neglect, no ravages of time testify to the present or to the coming generations that we have forgotten as a people the cost of a free and undivided republic.” — General Logan – May 5, 1868

We need to remember with sincere respect those who paid the price for our freedoms; we need to keep in sacred remembrance those who died serving their country. We need to never let them be forgotten. However, over the years the original meaning and spirit of Memorial Day has faded from the public consciousness.

Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a day of remembrance for those who have died in our nation’s service. There are many stories as to its actual beginnings, with over two dozen cities and towns laying claim to being the birthplace of Memorial Day.

There is also evidence that organized women’s groups in the South were decorating graves before the end of the Civil War: a hymn published in 1867, “Kneel Where Our Loves are Sleeping” by Nella L. Sweet carried the dedication “To The Ladies of the South who are Decorating the Graves of the Confederate Dead” (Source: Duke University’s Historic American Sheet Music, 1850-1920).

While Waterloo N.Y. was officially declared the birthplace of Memorial Day by President Lyndon Johnson in May 1966, it’s difficult to prove conclusively the origins of the day. It is more likely that it had many separate beginnings; each of those towns and every planned or spontaneous gathering of people to honor the war dead in the 1860’s tapped into the general human need to honor our dead, each contributed honorably to the growing movement that culminated in Gen Logan giving his official proclamation in 1868.

It is not important who was the very first, what is important is that Memorial Day was established. Memorial Day is not about division. It is about reconciliation; it is about coming together to honor those who gave their all.

Memorial Day was officially proclaimed on 5 May 1868 by General John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, in his General Order No. 11, and was first observed on 30 May 1868, when flowers were placed on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery. The first state to officially recognize the holiday was New York in 1873. By 1890 it was recognized by all of the northern states.

The South refused to acknowledge the day, honoring their dead on separate days until after World War I (when the holiday changed from honoring just those who died fighting in the Civil War to honoring Americans who died fighting in any war).

It is now celebrated in almost every State on the last Monday in May (passed by Congress with the National Holiday Act of 1971 (P.L. 90 – 363) to ensure a three day weekend for Federal holidays), though several southern states have an additional separate day for honoring the Confederate war dead: January 19 in Texas, April 26 in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, and Mississippi; May 10 in South Carolina; and June 3 (Jefferson Davis’ birthday) in Louisiana and Tennessee.
