Astorino Choice–wins Spreckman seat.

Hits: 111

WPCNR CAMPAIGN 2016. From the Tuniolo Campaign. August 10, 2016:

Voters in Yonkers and Mount Vernon reaffirmed their desire for bipartisan, cooperative government on Tuesday when they elected David Tubiolo to the Board of Legislators by a 62%-38% margin.  Legislator-Elect Tubiolo replaces retiring Legislator Bernice Spreckman who represented District 14 since 1995.

The special election was held in accordance with the Westchester County Charter which calls for the election to take place within 90 days of the date the seat was vacated.  Voter turnout was higher than expected.

Following the election, Minority Leader, Legislator John Testa (R) Peekskill said, “Congratulations to David Tubiolo on a well-run and hard-working campaign. Having David join us at the BOL will ensure the continuation of the Bi-Partisan Coalition that has been so successful in keeping spending down and taxes flat. The real winners today were the taxpayers and citizens of Westchester County.”

Board of Legislators Vice-Chairman Jim Maisano (R) New Rochelle said, “I commend Christine Peter’s and David Tubiolo on running positive, issues-oriented campaigns.  I welcome Mr. Tubiolo as a colleague at the Board of Legislators. David has indicated that he is eager to be a part of the bipartisan coalition and that is good news for the residents of Westchester County and district 14.”

County Executive Rob Astorino said, “I congratulate Legislator-Elect David Tubiolo on his hard-won victory.  David and his opponent ran positive campaigns which they should be proud of.  I know David will be a valuable member of the bipartisan coalition on the Board of Legislators.  After 20 plus years of outstanding representation from Legislator Bernice Spreckman, it is great to know that the residents of District 14 will continue to have a strong advocate working on their behalf.”

71 YEARS AGO:THE 2ND ATOMIC BOMB WAS DROPPED ON NAGASAKI

Hits: 125

WPCNR OBSERVATIONS.By John F. Bailey. August 6, 2016 Reprinted from WPCNR archives:

Seventy-one years ago in 1945, today, August 9, the second atomic bomb was dropped on the Japan city, Nagasaki, two days after the Enola Gay, a single American bomber dropped an Atomic bomb on the city of Hiroshima, Japan.

The terrible effects of those two  bombs are a horror that has never been repeated

A second bomber, Bock’s Car on August 9, dropped another atomic bomb on Nagasaki, 71 years ago today.

Unknown thousands of Japanese citizens’ lives were vaporized, burned, maimed and two cities leveled to the ground in an instant in both bombings.

To grasp what one atomic bomb did to Nagasaki,  readers may see the photographs Japanese photographer Yosuki Yamato took of the aftermath of Nagasaki the day it happened at

http://www.exploratorium.edu/nagasaki/photos.html#journey/63.jpg

The decision to drop the bombs was made after the United States, Great Britain and the Republic of China demanded Japan  surrender in the Potsdam Declaration on July 26 or face  “prompt and utter destruction”.

The Japanese government did not surrender. After the Nagasaki bombing, they did.

The United States deployed two nuclear weapons  dropping one on Hiroshimi, 71 years ago today and one on Nagasaki on August 9.

Over four months the bombs resulted in the deaths of   90,000–166,000 people in Hiroshima and 60,000–80,000 in Nagasaki, half dying the day the bombs fell.

The Hiroshima prefecture health department estimated that, of the people who died on the day of the explosion, 60% died from flash or flame burns, 30% from falling debris and 10% from other causes. During the following months, large numbers died from the effect of burns, radiation sickness, and other injuries, compounded by illness.

In a US estimate of the total immediate and short term cause of death, 15–20% died from radiation sickness, 20–30% from burns, and 50–60% from other injuries, compounded by illness. In both cities, most of the dead were civilians, although Hiroshima had a sizeable garrison.

The horror of those two bombings and the aftermath, the injuries created have resulted in an effort and reluctance on the part of nuclear-armed powers to avoid any nuclear attacks since that date.

Within a few days of those bombings, Japan surrendered unconditionally, officially ending World War II.

The decision to use the bombs by the United States has long been debated.

A dialogue on what the bombs did, why the decision was made was collected in 1995, the fiftieth year since the bombings. It is available at http://www.exploratorium.edu/nagasaki/commentary/decision.html

COUNTY NAMES ENGINEERING FIRM TO OVERSEE COUNTY EXECUTION OF PLAYLAND CAPITAL PROJECTS

Hits: 124

WPCNR PLAYLAND-GO-ROUND. From the Westchester County Department of Communications. August 4, 2016:

Westchester County Executive Robert P. Astorino and Standard Amusements, LLC, announced today that LiRo Engineers, Inc., will lead an engineering consortium, including Westchester-based and minority-owned, Savin Engineers, PC, to design the county capital projects that will rehabilitate and upgrade Playland.

“Hiring this consortium is the next step towards making the new Playland a reality,” said Astorino. “The consultants will ensure that this series of capital projects is streamlined and executed efficiently.”

Under the county’s public-private partnership with Standard Amusements, LLC, approved by the Westchester County Board of Legislators on May 2, 2016, the county is responsible for hiring an engineering consultant to provide design, construction and program administration. The consultant will also review the design documents submitted by Standard Amusements and coordinate the design and construction of all projects at Playland.

LiRo Engineers with Savin responded to a request for proposal (RFP) and was selected by the county’s Professional Selection Board in July is the most qualified firm to lead engineering services for Playland’s rehabilitation and upgrade projects.

“The speed with which Westchester County completed the RFP process and selected LiRo is impressive by any measure; this is an example of government operating at its best,” said Nicholas Singer, partner at Standard Amusements and a Harrison, NY native. “LiRo and Savin have with a strong reputation for doing outstanding work. This is a positive first-step in the right direction for this historic project.”

LiRo Engineers will work with the following sub-consultants to ensure the success of the projects:

  • Savin Engineers, PC, for electrical engineering design, structural engineering design, construction administration services, and program management services.
  • CTA Architects, PC, for architectural design and historic preservation services.
  • Historical Perspectives, Inc., for archaeological services.
  • YU & Associates Engineers, PC, for geotechnical engineering design services.
  • KM Associates of New York, Inc., for permitting services.

Of the consultants, two firms, Savin Engineers, PC, and YU & Associates Engineers, PC, are registered minority-owned businesses, and Historical Perspectives, Inc. is a woman-owned business.

The county, Standard Amusements and LiRo Engineers will begin developing a construction schedule for Playland and have the final schedule by the end of September 2016.

LEGAL ABORTION Coalition Charges Early August 9: Special Election for Spreckman Seat on Legislature Designed to Suppress Turnout

Hits: 123

WPCNR CAMPAIGN 2016. Special to WPCNR from the Westchester Coalition for Legal Abortion. August 4:

There’s a Special Election on Tuesday August 9th to elect the Westchester County Board of Legislator for the 14th District, representing South East Yonkers and Mount Vernon.

This election can help turn the Westchester legislature back into a pro-woman, pro-family, pro-safe-access-to-women’s-healthcare county government.
BUT ONLY IF YOU VOTE FOR CHRISTINE PETERS.

Westchester County Board Chairman Kaplowitz and anti-choice legislators Maisano, Marcotte, Gelfarb, Testa, Corcoran, Cunzio, Burrows and Perez – with the support of County Executive Astorino – voted to schedule the Special Election on August 9th instead of on Primary Day, Tuesday, September 13theven though it will cost Westchester taxpayers $100,000 in additional tax dollars.

Why? Because they hope you won’t vote. Primary Day would have produced a bigger voter turnout because of elections being held in Mount Vernon – and those legislators don’t like that. They want their handpicked anti-choice Party boy, who will vote in lockstep with them, to represent the 14th district.

Their motivation for holding this Special Election in the middle of the summer is to suppress voter turnout. THIS IS VOTER SUPPRESSION RIGHT HERE IN WESTCHESTER — AND THEY ARE USING OUR TAX DOLLARS TO DO IT!

Show those anti-choice anti-woman extremists that you won’t be manipulated. It is your constitutional right to vote and you won’t let them take it from you.

Christine Peters is a young, passionate, qualified social worker and working mother. She will be a great advocate for Westchester’s women and families.

Bendish Stands Alone. Mitch Benson Primary Bid Thrown Out by the Board of Elections on Signatures.

Hits: 103

WPCNR CAMPAIGN 2016. Special to WPCNR. August 3rd, 2016:

The Westchester County Board of Elections has ruled that District Attorney candidate Mitch Benson filed over one thousand invalid signatures in his attempt to force a Republican primary, which has led to his removal from the ballot. Benson’s disqualification officially eliminates any possibility of a September primary.

Bruce Bendish was already the presumptive party nominee after winning the endorsement with an overwhelming 3 to 1 vote at the Republican Party’s nominating convention back in April.

Having practiced law in Westchester for over 40 years, Bendish’s campaign focuses on experience. His experience includes 14 years as a prosecutor in the Westchester District Attorney’s office where he served as a Bureau Chief in both the Homicide and Rackets Bureaus, and earlier the Special Investigations Bureau. Bendish has worked as a defense attorney since 1987, and is now the only candidate in this race who has tried a case. Throughout his career he has worked closely with nearly all federal, state and local law enforcement agencies in Westchester. His experience working in nearly every court throughout the county has earned the respect of judges, local and county police agencies, the current District Attorney’s staff, as well as the defense bar – a benefit that is unique to him as a candidate in this race.

Bendish has also worked with both of the county’s most recent District Attorneys. He worked along side both Jeanne Pirro and Janet DiFiore under former District Attorney Carl Vergari during part of his tenure at the Westchester District Attorney’s office, and Janet DiFiore also worked part time at Bendish’s private practice, Goodrich & Bendish, from 1987 – 1994.

Election day is Tuesday, November 8. You can learn more about Bruce Bendish and his campaign by visiting www.VoteBendishDA.com.

Photographs of the National Night Out in White Plains New York USA

The crowd mills about the White Plains Public Safety Building at the 5th White Plains National Night Out extravaganza Tuesday night, meeting White Plains police and fire officers, inspecting police equipment, talking with officers about their jobs and getting to know White Plains finest and bravest. Photographs by Peter Katz

WPCNR PHOTOGRAPHS OF THE NIGHT. From Peter Katz. August 3, 2018:

The White Plains Department of Public Safety entertained and informed hundreds of White Plains citizens young and old of all ages Tuesday evening in front of the Public Safety Building as part of the National Night Out nationwide effort to build community ties with police and public safety personnel.

The Department of Public Safety in White Plains has no public relations problem with its citizens however because from WPCNR experience any interaction with White Plains police and fireman has always been courteous and respectful and businesslike towards citizens with rare instances or controversy. This public trust strong traditionally in White Plains was everywhere on South Lexington Avenue as children and adults alike learned about the police and fire operations, county police, and other law enforcement and support groups.

The rank and file White Plains police and firemen should be commended for their poise and respect towards citizens, which I have observed and experienced first hand over the 40 years I have lived in White Plains.

From the former late Commissioner John Dolce, to Commissioner Frank Straub to present Commissioner David Chong, that reputation and discipline of courtesy, professionalism and respect has been upheld, enhanced and demanded by the leaders of the department who consistently have set this as a number one attribute their officers should demonstrate in interaction with the community.

This is how it was last night at the White Plains Night Out in these photographs by Peter Katz:
