Meet the new YLE Northeast

Not just for New York anymore

Hi everyone,

A few weeks ago, Marisa Donnelly  (hinted that there were some changes coming for this newsletter, and today I’m SO incredibly excited to announce our official launch of YLE Northeast — a new and expanded scope for this newsletter.

As I’ve written at Your Local Epidemiologist’s national newsletter, I envision a world where, much like meteorologists translate real-time data to empower and prepare communities for the weather (e.g., grab an umbrella or prepare for an oncoming hurricane), epidemiologists “translate” and contextualize timely data to help communities lead healthier lives.

We launched the New York newsletter in September 2024, and it has grown to over 45,000 subscribers since then. Last year, we added a California newsletter to the mix, and I keep hearing from readers that you want more local newsletters. We are working our tails off to make that happen, and today we’re taking the next big step: our New York coverage will expand to the Northeast.

Right now, only about 35% of those of you getting this newsletter actually live in New York — and we hear from out-of-state readers that issues that affect New York often touch its regional neighbors. We’re glad you’re here, and we’re bringing in reinforcements to get even more local health information to the rest of the region:

Julia Tellerman, a public health professional in Rochester, N.Y., will take over New York coverage.

Asuka Koda, a rockstar health journalist and former student of mine, will expand our on-the-ground focus in Connecticut.

I will be helping in the background so that, together, we bring you timely, human, understandable, and actionable information each week. I’m excited for you to meet our growing team in the weeks ahead!

As an existing subscriber to YLE New York, you don’t need to do anything. You will continue to receive a newsletter. It will look a little different as we expand into other states, but we will continue to bring you information from NYC to the state topics you care about.

However, our local expansion is only possible because of the incredible support of the YLE community. Paid subscribers make up ~85% of the funding for our newsletters.

To celebrate the launch of our Northeast newsletter, we’re offering a 20% discount on your first year, if you subscribe (or upgrade your paid subscription) to YLE Everywhere. You’ll get access to national and local coverage, support our plans to expand the team, and help bring translated public health to more communities across the country.

The details

  • When is the first Northeast newsletter? Next week! October 8.
  • What should I expect? YLE Northeast will be in your inbox once per week, “translating” complex public health data into useful, timely insights specific to the region. We will have a disease “weather report” for the Northeast region, as well as location-specific spotlights on the most important things to know.
  • There are a million ways to define the Northeast; how do I know I’m there? YLE Northeast will focus on New York and everything east of that state.

Bottom line

We are expanding! See you next week!

Love, the YLE team
