APRIL 7–HERE COME THE MEDICARE SCAMS BEWARE! RAISE SPECTRES OF MEDICARE CARD TERMINATION OR LOSS IN MAIL.

Hits: 310

WPCNR  DICK TRACY’S SCAMSTOPPERS  NOTEBOOK. By John F. Bailey April 7, 2025:

This morning’s switchboard at WPCNR lit up with the usual Monday morning calls: unsolicited blind telephone calls.

With an ominous twist:

Last week I got calls  at least two or three a day offering me the possibility of  cash off, and credit cards and savings eligibility if I had Medicare  supplemental coverages A & B, or opted for them if I could give my Medicard number. I declined because I thought this was an obvious scam. I reported it to the Westchester County Board of Consumer Protection.

This morning, I received a call with a more chilling message. The caller told me “Your Medicare Card is being terminated.” I did not let them finish the spiel.

The reason I did so: once you are issued a Medicare Card it is not ever terminated unless there is a change issued by the Social Security agency itself. I dismissed the call, saying this is a scam.  I reported this to the Consumer Bureau.

The Bureau said I had to report that call to Social Security. That is hard to do now since all offices of social security are under the possibility of being closed or consolidated or being accessible only by telephone, which already are jamming up.

Then just before noon–

Another call from someplace called “HomeLine” that was again a caller asking “Have you received your Medicare Card yet?” I said I could not answer that question. I then reported this one.

These dangerous escalation of social security fraud, which will frighten persons thinking their Medicare is being terminated and will most like fall for whatever procedure (telephone number to call) to answer a question to assure you are still eligible for the card.

Social Security will not contact you at your home for any reason according their official procedures, according to Lifelock

The all-new Social Security Agency being downsized and looked at for cuts in the newly recent Budget created to extend the debt ceiling deadline should be aware of this new exploitation of Medicare insecurities. Whoever is looking at cyber crime now should receive a headsup and eyeson alert.

If I got two of these faux Medicare calls in a space of 3 hours, vulnerable citizens may be taken in by them. The calls raise insecurity about “Oh My God, the administration is cancelling Medicare!” and they do anything asked of them in the call.

Or if you have recently applied for Medicare, and you get a call asking have you received your Medicare Card yet, and you just applied, you say “Oh My God, the government has screwed up again!”

Perhaps your calls if you cannot contact social security should be directed to Congressional and Senate members, while the new streamlined Social Security Department gets functioning smoothly.

Make no mistake, these are dumb scams but they are going to get more sophisticated and devious in the confusion over social security in the weeks and months ahead. The victims will be the elderly, the young, families, who will panic when  they get these.

I did.

This is the “Anything Goes Age”

April 6–SENATOR GILLIBRAND INTO THE BREECH

This week, Kirsten proudly supported Senator Cory Booker’s record-breaking speech on the Senate floor to protest the actions of the Trump administration. She joined Senator Booker to discuss the damage being done to Social Security, national security, and air travel safety.

Watch Kirsten’s speeches on Social Security national security , and air travel safety .

2. Defending health care for 9/11 heroes

Image

The Trump administration’s decision to fire staff that provide critical support to the World Trade Center Health Program (WTCHP) is utterly disgraceful.

The first responders and survivors who put their lives on the line during our country’s darkest hour deserve treatment for the conditions that they developed as a result of 9/11. That’s why Kirsten led a bipartisan letter demanding that President Trump reverse cuts affecting the WTCHP, and she will not rest until he does so.

3. Fighting for food bank funding

Image

Last month, President Trump slashed $1 billion in federal funding used to purchase food for food banks, schools, and child care centers. Now, he is canceling another $500 million in already approved funding for food banks and other emergency food providers through The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP).

This money is used to feed New Yorkers at regional food banks, soup kitchens, and food pantries. Without it, New Yorkers will go hungry.

That’s why Kirsten is doing everything in her power to reverse these cuts and call on the Trump administration to share what plans – if any – they have to keep Americans from going hungry.

4.  Protecting libraries and museums

Image

Libraries and museums are crucial to meet the information, education, research, cultural, and civic needs of our country.

Following President Trump’s decision to place the staff of the Institute of Museum and Library Services on administrative leave, Kirsten sent a bipartisan letter to the administration demanding that they continue to support museum, library, and information services in line with their legal obligations.

5. WATCH: Kirsten on CNN

Image

On Tuesday, Kirsten joined CNN’s Pamela Brown to discuss the harm being done by the Trump administration, Senator Booker’s marathon speech, “Signalgate,” and more.

Watch here.

6. Helping constituents with Social Security

Image

When a constituent learned she was owed Social Security disability benefits but then did not receive additional payment, she reached out to Kirsten’s office for help.

Kirsten’s team contacted the Social Security Administration on her behalf. Within weeks, the constituent received a $60,000 payment for the retroactive benefits owed to her.

Individual casework is Kirsten’s top priority. If you need help with any federal agency, contact her here.

Ms Hunt-Robinson’s campaign office has not gotten back to WPCNR with an answer to whether the Democratic City Committee is challenging the validity of the signatures on her petitions, which the City Committee has done in the past.

Ms. Hunt-Robinson was interviewed by John Bailey on the White Plains Television Interview program People to Be Heard in August when she announced her candidacy.

YOUR LOCAL EPIDEMIOLOGIST ON THE HEALTH CARE WORKERS MASSACRE.

Hits: 190

My closing thoughts after a massacre today.

Public servants don’t do this work for prestige or money. Every one of the thousands who lost their jobs—over the past two months and in the months to come—is motivated by one mission: to serve their communities. We don’t fight for science or agencies. We fight for people. We fight for kids. For the right to survive and the hope to thrive…

So, even as these systems are dismantled or privatized, the fight for public health continues—with camaraderie, with hope, and with the quiet (and not-so-quiet) resilience of millions of people who will never stop fighting for the public’s well-being.

That will never change. And it can’t be taken away.

APRIL 4—SENATOR GILLIBRAND REACTS TO TRUMP PUTSCH OF TOP 2 MILITARY TOP SECURITY OFFICIALS.

Hits: 170

GILLIBRAND STATEMENT ON OUSTING OF HEAD OF NATIONAL SECURITY AGENCY AND U.S. CYBER COMMAND

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, member of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence and Senate Armed Services Committee, issued the following statement on the Trump administration’s politically motivated firing of General Timothy Haugh, the commander of U.S. Cyber Command and director of the National Security Agency (NSA), and Wendy Noble, the deputy director of the NSA.

“President Trump’s dismissal of General Haugh and Ms. Noble at the insistence of a far-right conspiracy theorist is unprecedented and deeply disturbing. General Haugh served our country for over 30 years and was confirmed to his former position with unanimous bipartisan support. This is the latest in the president’s chilling purge of military and national security leadership, and the loss of decades of experience leaves civilians, critical infrastructure — including elections — and our men and women in uniform more vulnerable to sabotage, espionage, and compromise.

I demand President Trump immediately justify to Congress why he valued the opinion of a far-right conspiracy theorist over decades of nonpartisan national security leadership in service of the United States.

The military is not a partisan institution, and Congress must ensure that President Trump does not make it one.”

APRIL 3–Senator Gillibrand Decries Administration Attack on LOW iNCOME Energy Assistance Program

Hits: 246

CUTS THREATEN TO RAISE COST OF LIVING FOR MORE THAN ONE MILLION NEW YORK HOUSEHOLDS

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand issued the following statement on the Trump administration firing all the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) staff running the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, which will render the program incapable of disbursing funding to New York and deprive low-income New Yorkers of energy assistance they rely on:

LIHEAP is a commonsense, bipartisan program,” said Senator Gillibrand. “In the coldest and hottest months of the year, it lowers the cost of living and saves lives. By firing everyone who disburses LIHEAP funding, President Trump and the so-called ‘Department of Government Efficiency’ are preventing hundreds of millions of dollars in federal funding that Congress has already allocated to LIHEAP from reaching families in need. President Trump is raising the cost of living, all to provide tax cuts for billionaires. I will be doing everything in my power to get President Trump to reverse these cuts and deliver financial assistance to New Yorkers who need it.”

LIHEAP helps tens of thousands of low-income households across the state afford their energy bills and make cost-effective repairs to their heating systems. During winter 2022-2023, the program helped 1.1 million New York households heat their homes.

Gillibrand has been a longstanding advocate of the program. Every year, she secures hundreds of millions in LIHEAP funding for New York. She also cosponsors legislation to expand LIHEAP and ensure that no household pays more than three percent of its annual income on energy costs.
