AUGUST 27– CITY OF WHITE PLAINS REMEMBERS SEPTEMBER 11 FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 11 8:30 AM IN LIBERTY PARK

.
2024  MEMORIAL
White Plains, NY – August 27, 2026. The City of White Plains will commemorate the 25th anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks on Friday, September 11, at 8:30 a.m. at Liberty Park on Lake Street.

Liberty Park is the site of the White Plains 9/11 Memorial, honoring the sacrifices made by so many and specifically the six White Plains residents who lost their lives on September 11, 2001.

Our annual Remembrance Ceremony includes remarks from Mayor Justin Brasch, prayers from faith leaders in our community, and a wreath laying. Members of the White Plains Common Council will also place flowers at the Memorial as we read the names of those we lost, followed by a moment of silence.
This year in recognition of the 25th anniversary, the city will plant and dedicate an October Glory Maple tree. Maples have come to symbolize peace and strength – ideals we continue to strive for. The October Glory also represents resilience and adaptability in difficult times. This memorial tree will stand as a living reminder of those we lost and our enduring commitment to remember.
“September 11 is always a solemn day of reflection, but on this anniversary we pause to remember a day that forever changed our country, as well as the lives of so many in White Plains,” said Mayor Brasch. “Time can never dull the pain of that day, but we will reflect on the sacrifices and recommit ourselves to service to our country and each other.”

The Remembrance Ceremony is open to the public. All are encouraged to attend to honor our nation, the lives lost, and those whose lives continue to be affected by the tragic events of September 11, 2001.

This event is accessible to all. Please reach out to the Recreation & Parks Department at 914-422-1336 for questions about accessibility at Liberty Park.

AUGUST 27- GOVERNOR AND AFYA FOUNDATION AID PUERTO RICO WATER SHORTAGE

New York State To Deliver 26 Full Pallets of Emergency Drinking Water From Yonkers To San Juan and Nearby Communities

Governor Kathy Hochul today announced a joint water relief effort with the Afya Foundation, a Westchester-based humanitarian relief organization, and corporate donors to supply Puerto Rico with 26 emergency drinking water pallets in the midst of an ongoing severe water shortage.

The Governor is committed to providing direct relief to Puerto Ricans during this emergency, with rapid humanitarian response efforts as well as community-led emergency operations currently underway.

“New York shares an everlasting bond with Puerto Rico, one that’s founded through a shared cultural identity, resilience and trust,” Governor Hochul said. “In times of crisis, New Yorkers will always act — that’s why we’re delivering immediate aid today and coordinating with our state agencies and local partners to provide long-term assistance. Puerto Rico exemplifies strength and resilience, and I am committed to uplifting affected residents during this emergency.”

The emergency pallets will be distributed in San Juan and surrounding municipalities following the combined effects of the island-wide drought emergency and Puerto Rico’s aging water infrastructure affecting nearly 500,000 residents from receiving purified drinking water.

The 26 pallets will contain 1,900 cases with 45,000 individual bottles of clean drinking water, totaling more than 5,900 gallons of emergency supply.

City of Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano said,

“Yonkers and Puerto Rico share a deep bond, and when families on the island need help, we respond. Thank you Governor Hochul for leading the charge and reminding Puerto Rico that New York stands with them, and thank you to the AFYA Foundation and our Office of Emergency Management for helping get this water where it is needed most.”

AFYA Foundation CEO Danielle Butin said, “When disaster strikes or a community faces an urgent crisis, New Yorkers don’t stand by — we act. Puerto Rico is facing a severe water emergency, and AFYA is proud to lock arms with Governor Hochul, and our generous corporate partners, to deliver immediate relief. Sending these pallets of drinking water directly from New York to families in need is a testament to what we can accomplish when state government, non-profits and the private sector move swiftly together.”

The Afya Foundation has been accepting donations at their warehouse in Yonkers, with the distribution made possible by corporate donors. The City of Yonkers’ Office of Emergency Management and Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano also partnered with Afya to donate nearly 100 cases of bottled water.

AUGUST 26– THE SENATOR ADDS UP THE TRUMP IMPACT ON NEW YORKERS. GILLEBRAND COUNTS IT UP

NEW STUDY: FAMILIES IN NEW YORK HAVE HAD TO SPEND $5,000+ MORE BECAUSE OF TRUMP

JEC Report: The Average Household In New York Has Had To Pay An Additional $5,000+ For Goods And Services Due To Rising Costs Under President Trump

Washington, D.C. — Today, a new Joint Economic Committee (JEC) report found that as of July 2026, the average household in New York has had to pay an additional $5,000+ for goods and services due to rising costs under President Trump. When campaigning in 2024, candidate Trump promised, “Starting on day one of my new administration, we will end inflation, and we will make America affordable again.”

In response to the new report and Republicans broken promises, U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand issued the following statement:

“President Trump and Congressional Republicans promised to lower costs and end inflation, instead they’ve made life $5,000 more expensive for New Yorkers,” said Senator Gillibrand. “Look at what they have done: they gutted Medicaid and cut Medicare and health care subsidies to fund tax breaks for billionaires, launched a war that increased gas prices, and supported tariffs to make groceries and essentials more expensive.  I will not stop fighting to lower New Yorkers’ costs and hold this administration accountable for hurting working families and small businesses across our state.”

Additional breakdowns of the JEC report:

Housing Costs

  • New York families have had to spend an additional $1,078 on housing costs such as rent and mortgage payments since President Trump took office.

Grocery Costs

  • Americans paid an additional $310 for groceries in President Trump’s first year than in 2024, and grocery prices are now more than 4 percent higher than when Trump took office.
  • Beef and coffee prices are hitting Americans especially hard. Since the President took office, the average price of ground beef has risen almost every month to a record high of more than $7 per pound. Coffee prices also spiked and are now nearly $10 per pound.

Energy Costs

  • Gas prices have soared since the start of Trump’s Iran War. In total, people across New York have spent an additional $3 billion on gas since the beginning of the Iran war. That has cost the average family in New York an additional $521 in gas costs
  • Families in New York spent an additional $190 on electricity in 2025 under President Trump than they did in 2024. And, in just the first six months of 2026, they are expected to spend an additional $225 on electricity than they did in the first half of 2024.
  • New York families who use heating oil paid an additional $248 to heat their homes this March compared to last year.

Health Care Costs

  • Because of Trump and Republicans’ refusal to extend the Affordable Care Act (ACA) tax cuts that help people afford their health insurance, monthly premiums for ACA plans rose over 50 percent on average in 2026 compared to last year. Meanwhile deductibles surged to record highs, increasing by more than $1,000 on average.
