SEPTEMBER 21– GOVERNOR HOCHUL ANNOUNCES NEW WEATHER INFORMATION INITIATIVE

GOVERNOR HOCHUL ANNOUNCES LAUNCH OF STATE UNIVERSITY OF NEW YORK AT ALBANY’S MESONET CLIMATOLOGY PORTAL AS PART OF CLIMATE WEEK

$2 Million in State Investment Supports NYS Mesonet Operations to Expand Access to Data for Meteorologists and Emergency Managers

New Public Portal Provides Detailed Look at New York Weather Patterns Using a Decade of Mesonet Data

In recognition of Climate Week, Governor Kathy Hochul today announced that the New York State Mesonet at the State University of New York (SUNY) at Albany has launched a public climatology website that offers the most detailed look yet at how New York’s climate is changing.

Built in response to Superstorm Sandy, the NYS Mesonet is one of the largest and most technologically advanced weather warning networks in the nation, and its operations are supported this year with $2 million in state funding. Every day, emergency managers across the state use the Mesonet to help protect New Yorkers from extreme weather — deadly flash flooding, unhealthy wildfire smoke and intense Lake Effect Snow — increasingly associated with climate change.

The trove of weather data the Mesonet produced over the last decade represents the first milestone in a 30-year project to better understand how climate change is impacting New York. In the process, it is strengthening New York’s nation-leading efforts to adapt to climate change and decarbonize our economy through applications like better forecasting of future renewable power generation from wind and solar.

“During Climate Week, as the federal government divests from critical climate research, New York State is reaffirming its commitment to science and innovation that helps us understand the challenges we face, keep New Yorkers safe and prepare our communities for the future,” Governor Hochul said. ”The New York State Mesonet at the State University of New York at Albany’s climatology website is going to lead the way on groundbreaking research to strengthen understanding of our climate and climate change so meteorologists, emergency managers, and policy makers can ensure New York is the most prepared state in the nation.”

Collected every five minutes, the data feeds weather prediction models and decision-support tools for users across New York, and is widely relied upon by forecasting, emergency management and transportation agencies — including the National Weather Service and the New York State Weather Risk Communication Center, a partnership between the State University of New York at Albany and the state Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services that ensures New York’s public sector has the weather intelligence it needs to act.

New York State Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services Commissioner Terry O’Leary said, “The impacts of climate change continue to be felt across New York State with extreme weather events becoming more frequent and intense. Thanks to Governor Hochul’s investments in emergency management staff and training, weather forecasting through the Mesonet, and new communication tools at the State Weather Risk Communication Center, our state is more prepared and ready than ever before to meet these challenges head on to keep New Yorkers safe. We look forward to continuing our partnership with the experts at UAlbany to better understand New York’s changing climate and help us make the best decisions during future extreme weather events.”

SEPTEMBER 21— COUNTY EXECUTIVE JENKINS ASKS WESTCHESTER HOW WE CAN FIX THE FLOODING

PREPARING WESTCHESTER FOR WHAT COMES NEXT

Westchester Wants Your Input on Preparing for Natural Disasters

(White Plains, NY) – Have something you want to say about flooding?

Now is your chance. Westchester County is asking residents, local officials and community leaders to help shape how the County prepares for these risks by reviewing and commenting on its updated Hazard Mitigation Plan.

The plan identifies risks from natural disasters, including flooding, hurricanes and extreme weather, and outlines ways to better protect people, property and infrastructure. An updated plan also ensures the County and its municipalities remain eligible for future federal disaster mitigation funding.

County Executive Ken Jenkins said he wants feedback from municipal officials, community leaders and residents before the plan is finalized:

“Flooding, severe storms and extreme weather can have a major impact on communities across Westchester and preparing before disaster strikes can make all the difference.”

Westchester County Emergency Services Commissioner Susan Spear said: “Hazard mitigation plans are important tools for identifying vulnerabilities and developing actions to prevent disasters from occurring. An important focus of this plan is the neighborhoods which experience repetitive flooding and are susceptible to other natural disasters.”

Westchester’s updated plan will connect with New York State’s Mitigate NY platform, giving the County access to expanded research, data and resources to strengthen its disaster planning.

Planning Commissioner Blanca Lopez said:

“Hazard mitigation planning is an important part of a more resilient future for all of Westchester. We continue to work with the County Office of Emergency Management and our state and federal partners to improve hazard planning and land use planning. The Hazard Mitigation Plan is just one of many initiatives to address vulnerability and reduce risk. We encourage everyone to review the plan and get involved.”

SEPTEMBER 21–PERSPECTIVE ’26 TRANSCRIPT FROM WHITE PLAINS WEEK SEPTEMBER 18 TELECAST

NOW ON PERSPECTIVE ’26 I  WILL TRY HUMBLY TO MAKE SENSE OF THIS NEWS.

WILL KEVIN WARSH STOP INFLATION WITH HIS ¼ RISE IN COST OF BORROWING. I DOUBT IT.

KEEPING THE RATE AT 3.5% ALL LAST YEAR  DID NOT DO IT.  COMPANIES IN THE FIRST QUARTER FIRED THOUSANDS AND RAISED PRICES USING OIL AND TARIFFS AS EXCUSES THE RESULT GREAT PROFITS FOR THEM AND MISERY FOR YOU MR. AND MRS AND MS. AMERICA.

THE ANALYSIS THAT THE FED RAISING THE RATE 1/4%  MAY SIGNAL TO INVESTORS THAT THE BOARD IS ” PROACTIVE”   ABOUT MANAGING INFLATION COAXING INVESTORS TO EXPECT INFLATION TO MODERATE AND DEMAND A LOWER RETURN ON GOVERNMENT BONDS. BY A LEADING INVESTMENT ADVISOR IS INTERESTING.

HIGH INTEREST RATE LAST YEAR  CERTAINLY DID NOT DO THAT ALL THIS YEAR AND LAST YEAR.

THEN THE ADVISOR  SAID “IF GROWTH STAYS RESILIENT AND THEY HIKE FIVE OR SIX TIMES, THEN THE LONG END (10 YEAR BONDS) IS NOT GOING TO GO DOWN. IT REALLY DEPENDS ON HOW MANY TIMES THEY HIKE” WHAT DO YOU MAKE OF THAT?

IS THE FED SIMPLY ROLLING THE DICE, HOPING INFLATION WILL GO DOWN?  STEP RIGHT UP AND YOU BET YOUR INTEREST RATE. THAT’S WHAT THE FED IS DOING.

ON ANOTHER MATTER:

GOVERNOR HOCHUL IS PAYING 8,200 NEW YORKERS  $200 TO HELP US WITH ENERGY COSTS AND THE CHECKS ARE IN THE MAIL TODAY. SHE IS ALSO ESTABLISHING “FLOODSAFE” TO IDENTIFY WHERE COMMUNITIES ACROSS THE STATE ARE VULNERABLE.  SHE HAS  ALREADY SIGNED INTO LAW ALSO DEMANDING MORE DISCLOSURE OF POWER COMPANY INCREASES.

BUT SOMETHING  IS MISSING.

I SAY IT’S MONEY.

YOU MAY IDENTIFY FLOODING EARLY WARNING BUT WE IN WESTCHESTER KNOW WHERE OUR DRAINS AND SEWERS ARE OVERFLOWING ALL OVER THE SOUTH SHORE AND WE EVEN SHUT DOWN SEWER PLANTS TO AVOID BLACKOUTS.

THE GOVERNOR KNOWS THIS AND SO DOES OUR COUNTY EXECUTIVE AND OUR LEGISLATORS  SAY NOTHING ABOUT FUNDING SEWER REPAIR.

AS JERRY MCGUIRE  THE MOVIE AGENT SAID “SHOW ME THE MONEY.”

I ALSO SALUTE SENATOR GILLEBRAND FOR HER STAND ON MENOPAUSE IT IS ABOUT TIME.

JUST A WORD:

I HAVE BEEN TELLING YOU THE LAST MONTH, THE STATE IS NO LONGER TELLING US HOW MANY COVID CASES HAVE BEEN REPORTED DAILY IN THE COUNTY. THE STATE WIDE INFECTIONS OF NEW COVID HAVE EQUALED INFECTIONS BACK ON MARCH 30 OF THIS YEAR, 772 IN A MONTH. WESTCHESTER DOES NOT KNOW WHERE IT IS ON COVID.

MY GUESS (BASED ON A 1 PERSON WITH COVID GIVING COVID TO 2 OTHER PERSONS WHICH WAS THE INFECTION RATE IN JULY FROM JUNE COVID INFECTIONS),IS:

WE SHOULD HAVE 1,500 COVID INFECTIONS IN WESTCHESTER COUNTY BY THE END OF SEPTEMBER.

THE NEW YORK HEALTH DEPARTMENT SHOULD RESUME UPDATE COVID INFECTIONS ACROSS THE STATE, OTHERWISE WE DO NOT KNOW WHERE WE ARE ON COVID GROWTH IN CASES.

TRUE INFORMATION IS SECURITY. NO INFORMATION IS JUST HOPING. NO INFORMATION ON COVID SPREAD CREATES ANOTHER COVID SURGE ESCALATING BECAUSE OF PUBLIC FEELS COVID IS OVER, AND IS APATHETIC, NOT FEELING THE NEED FOR GETTING VACCINATED AND, OF COURSE  SOCIALIZES IRRESPONSIBLY.

COUNTY EXECUTIVE JENKINS IS RIGHT. GET YOUR FLU AND COVID SHOTS.

THIS IS JOHN BAILEY REPORTING FOR WHITE PLAINS WEEK…GOOD NIGHT AND THANK YOU
