WPCNR Press Box. By Fast Pitch Johnny. August 25, 2004: After a weekend of workouts, the New York New Jersey Juggernaut flew to Akron, Ohio Tuesday to open the first-ever National Pro Fastpitch Playoffs and Championship Series at Firestone Stadium this evening. The Juggernaut with Amanda Scott the most likely starter face the second place Akron Racers at 6 P.M. The game can be heard worldwide on internet radio at www.npf.prosportsradio.com with Aaron Moore and Bob Ehrens at the worldwide mike. In the second game at 8 P.M., the first place Texas Thunder play the always dangerous New England Riptide.

The Juggernauts were taking live batting practice Monday afternoon, contemplating facing Akron’s Niki Meyers who has beaten them three times this season. In order to advance to the Championship series (best 2 out of 3 on Saturday and Sunday in Akron), the Juggernaut have to overcome the Racers who will have home crowd advantage and presumably, with the redoubtable Meyers on the hill. Though starting pitchers for both teams have not been named.
Nauts have that Winning Feeling.
The Juggernaut come into tonight’s opening best of three series riding a seven-game winning streak with the ability to throw Amanda Scott (tied with the Thunder’s Crista Williams for most wins in the league at 15-7) in 2 of the 3 contests. A well-rested Amanda Scott, we might add. The Juggernaut hit the ball well in their last seven games after failing in their bids to overtake Akron and Texas for the league regular season championship.
The key to this series will be of course who hits better and who fields better. Juggernaut defense let them down in the two key series with Akron and Texas two weeks ago, and the hitters were handcuffed by Meyers in the Akron series and Christa Williams and Lindsay Chouinard in the Texas series.
Softball’s Connie Mack Speaks.
Paul Plemenos , Juggernaut manager and owner, says that is in the past: “We’re just going to go out there and play good ball. In our last seven games, we’ve hit the ball very very well. Our bats have really come alive with double-digit hits in two of those games. We’re hopeful we’ll keep the bats alive.”
The Juggernauts were facing the crafty offerings of Bob Wasilak, a men’s fastpitch specialist who has coached fastpitch on the high school level in New Jersey for twenty years. W. is so impressed with the dedication, and professionalism of the Juggernaut, that he has volunteered to pitch live hitting practice for them. Lauren Bauer, Juggernaut centerfielder loved that concept when WPCNR spoke to her two weeks ago, saying live pitching was much better than machine propelled balls.

“We’re fortunate enough to have Bob Wasilak come out and pitch to us again so we can hit against live pitching without burning our pitchers’ arms,” Plemenos said as he watched Kelly Wilkerson hit one about 300 feet into the Delaware Water Gap. “He’s a pitcher for a men’s fastpitch league that has competed in nationals the last couple of years, and he’s their starting pitcher. He’s been gracious enough to come out here and donate his time along with his buddy who’s his catcher to work us out today. It’s great.”

” We’re not doing anything heavy, Just all light workouts just to keep the girls in hitting shape, keep their arms throwing and not doing anything very physically strenous. We’re doing what we can just to keep these girls in shape and get them mentally prepared. A lot of its more mental practice than it is a physical process.”
A World Series Atmosphere.
Plemenos said he was looking forward to the first NPF series in Akron: “There’s a lot of preparation on their part, I’m sure they’re going through. Akron’s got a nice tradition of having pro softball there in Firestone Stadium. I’m sure they are going to have the place nicely dressed and ready for all the teams and fans.”
“I’m very satisfied with where we are, “ he said. “Coming in third place, people look at us as the underdog. I like being in that spot. Having people underestimate us.”
Amazing Amanda Has to Remain Amazing for 5 More Days.
The key to this series for the Juggernaut is of course, Amanda Scott shutting down Akron, and of course, who the Juggernaut pitch in game two. If the Juggernaut go with the 1-2 of Scott and Kaci Clark, who has a history of being at her best in championship games (pitching the Stratford Brakettes to two ASA Championships with 1-0 victories), it gives the Juggernauts an edge, in this reporter’s opinion. Oaks, the most versatile Juggernaut and the pitcher who shored up the rotation in June, got two key starts down the stretch and did not fare well in either one.
Key D.
Akron presents a solid defensive team: Akron’s shortstop, Kristin Johnson, firstbaser Nicole Trimboli , league-leading hitter Iyhia McMichael at second base and centerfield, and Brandi Stuart at third are a very tight defensive combination.
Their outfield defense is perhaps the best outfield in the league. Besides Myers, the Racers can throw Danielle Henderson at the Juggernaut, who has also beaten the Nauts twice and Brandee McArthur.
The other two ballclubs, Texas and New England who play in the second game this evening, are an intriguing matchup. The Riptide will most likely go with Jocelyn Forrest, Cal-Berkely’s championship pitcher in 2002. Jocelyn is a glamorous pitcher who challenges hitters and when her stuff is moving and if she avoids a mistake, the Thunder could be in trouble. However, New England has to hit better. They simply have not been able to touch Thunder pitching in their matchups during the regular season. But, New England has perhaps lost more close games than any other team in the league. And in a short series, anything can happen. In a close game, you’re only one bad pitch and one great timely swing from a win.

The Playoff Scene.
Leigh Greenfelder, spokesperson for the Akron Racers, speaking to WPCNR from Akron today said the interest is really lively in Akron at this hour. She says a lot of fans from the New York area are coming out for the playoffs, and has also had a lot of calls from Juggernaut followers looking to come on out.
She reports the four teams on are the field practicing. The hospitality tents are up and there is a good advance sale. She reports that the Akron Beacon-Journal did a story on the league playoffs today and plans extensive coverage of the action. She says the field looks great and there is quite a buzz around the playoffs.
Greenfelder also gave details that ESPN is planning an NPF Game of the Week telecast all ten weeks of the season in 2005, with the thinking that a Thursday or Friday game would be taped and telecast in a regular time slot early Saturday afternoons. At least that is the current thinking, Greenfelder told WPCNR today.
