City Renovating the

Waller-Maple Parking Lot

The Waller-Maple Parking Lot is temporarily closed for rehabilitation and improvements to the lot as part of the City’s Capital Improvement Plan.

The City understands that the closure of this popular lot may inconvenience residents and patrons of downtown businesses and will work to complete the project as efficiently and safely as possible. There will be regular updates on the status of the project and when the lot will reopen.

During the temporary closure, there are multiple municipal parking garages and lots that are available within two blocks from Waller-Maple. Please click to view the parking map. On-street parking is also nearby.

Once complete, the Waller-Maple lot will have updated utilities, new retaining walls and sidewalks, clear pedestrian walkways across the lot, new parking kiosks, and new plantings to help beautify our city, as shown in the renderings.

Click here for additional renderings of the updated lot along with more details

about the closure and alternate parking locations.

City Expanding Rehabilitation Work at

Three White Plains Parking Garages

The City continues to invest in the maintenance and rehabilitation of its municipal parking garages, with work underway at the Library Garage and City Center Garage and major repairs planned for Chester-Maple, at right, in the Spring.

At the Library, work continues steadily to replace columns and repairs will expand to the garage ramps in November.

At the City Center Garage, the recent acquisition of the facility gives the City greater control to move forward with needed maintenance and improvements without having to wait for approval from additional ownership partners.

Since acquiring the garage in May, the Department of Public Works has assessed its condition and identified immediate repairs and longer-term improvements. The City Center Garage was found to be structurally stable. While the garage is in need of repairs, addressing maintenance needs now will help prevent deterioration and avoid more extensive and costly work down the road.

Read more about the work planned for all three garages, the City’s Municipal Parking Garage Rehabilitation capital plan and the City Center Garage acquisition.

City To Continue Increased Enforcement of Existing E-Bike Laws To Promote Safer Riding

Public Safety Commissioner Wade Hardy announced a continuation of the May Limited Use Vehicle (May LUV) initiative to increase enforcement of e-bike violations and to promote safer riding.

In a presentation to the Common Council, Commissioner Hardy detailed the increase of violations and summons issued to e-bike riders. The Department has also worked to educate riders and residents about New York State’s e-bike laws.

Click here for more information on the May LUV initiative, its results and NY State laws regarding e-bikes.

Updates to City Taxi Rates & Rules

New taxicab meter rates and updates to the White Plains taxi ordinance are rolling out now. The new rates are the first adjustment since 2016 and are intended to help local taxi operators manage rising costs while maintaining reliable service.

All licensed White Plains taxicabs will transition to the new metered rates between October 19 and December 7, 2026. During this period, passengers may notice differences in fares between taxicabs as individual vehicles are updated.

Additionally, the Common Council approved new amendments to the taxi ordinance including reducing fees around medallion transfers, reducing the cost of accessible medallions, and allowing medallion owners to lease their medallions to other properly licensed taxicab operators. These efforts will allow our local licensed taxi business to remain in operation while staying competitive in the current market.

New Mural Unveiled in Downtown White Plains

The City of White Plains and ArtsWestchester unveiled a new mural – Music To My Ears! – at the corner of 70 Church Street and Hamilton Avenue in downtown White Plains on October 15 as part of Mural Week, a statewide celebration of public art.

Designed and created by Victor Saint-Hilaire, known professionally as VASH, the mural took shape in just two weeks, drawing residents to stop to talk with the artist, cheer him on, help him paint, and learn more about his work. Read more about the artist and the mural and watch the unveiling event.

AMERICA 250 & BATTLE OF WHITE PLAINS

As the United States of America celebrates its 250th birthday, October was a special month with the 250th anniversary of the Battle of White Plains. Activities all month entertained us and taught us about this pivotal moment in the Revolutionary War. Events included a Hamilton singalong, an immersive presentation about the battle, concerts, lectures, and reenactments at Purdy House and Ward Pound Ridge. Huzzah!

HALLOWEEN SPOOKTACULARS!

Hundreds of kids, families and even dogs got in on the Halloween action this October picking out pumpkins, showing off creative costumes and trunk-or-treating down Court Street. Hope everyone got some of their favorite candy!

Liberty Tree for George Washington & America 250

A new oak tree stands at the north end of Tibbits Park to commemorate both George Washington and America’s 250th anniversary.

Earlier this year, crews from Public Works unearthed a plaque dedicating an oak tree to Washington in 1932 for the nationwide celebration of his 200th birthday.

The new oak was rededicated on October 22, the day Washington arrived in White Plains 250 years ago. Representatives from White Plains Beautification Foundation and the White Plains Revolutionary War 250 Committee helped Mayor Brasch and the Common Council mark the moment. Watch the event here.

  • Don’t forget to FALL BACK! Daylight Saving Time ends at 2:00 am on Sunday, November 1.

Public Safety In Search of Original Art Work

The Department of Public Safety is inviting local artists to donate original artwork for display in the main-floor atrium of the Public Safety Building.

This highly visible space is seen by hundreds of residents, visitors, and employees each day and offers a unique opportunity for artists to share their work with the community.

We welcome a variety of artistic media, including paintings, photography, mixed media, woodwork, and other original creations. Artwork should be suitable for secure wall mounting and reflect themes related to public safety, community, service, resilience, civic pride, or the partnership between first responders and the people they serve.

Public Safety Commissioner Wade Hardy invites all artists

to participate.

Artists interested in participating are encouraged to fill out the form here or email [email protected].
Deadline for Youth Climate Action Fund is Nov. 6
The Youth Climate Action Fund provides grants up to $5,000 each to groups of young people (ages 15-24) to create a climate action project.

Multiple projects have already been approved including planting a Miyawaki Pocket Forest, a volunteer-led Repair Cafe and WPPD Cadets

Green Guardians team to work with the police on environmental education and community service.
