Westchester Wants Your Input on Preparing for Natural Disasters
(White Plains, NY) – Have something you want to say about flooding?
Now is your chance. Westchester County is asking residents, local officials and community leaders to help shape how the County prepares for these risks by reviewing and commenting on its updated Hazard Mitigation Plan.
The plan identifies risks from natural disasters, including flooding, hurricanes and extreme weather, and outlines ways to better protect people, property and infrastructure. An updated plan also ensures the County and its municipalities remain eligible for future federal disaster mitigation funding.
County Executive Ken Jenkins said he wants feedback from municipal officials, community leaders and residents before the plan is finalized:
“Flooding, severe storms and extreme weather can have a major impact on communities across Westchester and preparing before disaster strikes can make all the difference.”
Westchester County Emergency Services Commissioner Susan Spear said: “Hazard mitigation plans are important tools for identifying vulnerabilities and developing actions to prevent disasters from occurring. An important focus of this plan is the neighborhoods which experience repetitive flooding and are susceptible to other natural disasters.”
Westchester’s updated plan will connect with New York State’s Mitigate NY platform, giving the County access to expanded research, data and resources to strengthen its disaster planning.
Planning Commissioner Blanca Lopez said:
“Hazard mitigation planning is an important part of a more resilient future for all of Westchester. We continue to work with the County Office of Emergency Management and our state and federal partners to improve hazard planning and land use planning. The Hazard Mitigation Plan is just one of many initiatives to address vulnerability and reduce risk. We encourage everyone to review the plan and get involved.”
