CityLine: January 5, 2001 - City HallCOUNTY HAS OLD COMPUTERS IT WANTS TO GIVE TO NON-PROFIT GROUPS As part of Spanos commitment to bridge the digital divide, Westchester County is giving away 400 old and unneeded computers. Saying that the Countys old equipment could still be put to a good use, Spano successfully pressed for a change in County law that allows his administration to give away these computers, printers and other electronic components. Under the new law Spano proposed and recently passed by the Board of Legislators, the Countys old and unneeded computer equipment may be given away to public not-for-profit organizations. The equipment includes IBM-compatible 486/66s and low-end Pentium processors, as well as assorted peripherals. Each will be configured with a Web browser. This is an extension of the Westchester Access Program put into effect last June 2000, under which the County has been helping match businesses looking to get rid of old computer equipment with non-profit organizations. Non-profit (IRS 501c3) groups wishing to find out about the equipment should go to the County web site, http://www.westchestergov.com/westchesteraccess. The county website offers a complete listing of the equipment on hand, and WPCNR is attempting to find out the procedure for obtaining the equipment. The site also advises interested organizations the eligibility requirements. As of this morning (January 5, 2001), this is the listing provided by the county's website: 80486 microprocessor at 33MHZ-Desktop Printers: Source: Westchester County Website.
