White Plains Turns Away Stepinac Rally, 21-14, to Take Turkey Bowl
|
|
|
WPCNR PRESS BOX. November 26,2009: Daryl Schuler's 8 Yard scamper around left end in the waning moments of the Third Quarter today, proved to be the winning TD as White Plains held off a two-touchdown rally by Stepinac in the final stanza to snap Stepinac's winning streak in the traditional Thanksgiving rivalry between the two teams. White Plains Doug Sewitch made a game-saving shoe-string tackle behind the line of scrimmage to stop Stepinac on 4th down deep in Tiger territory in the third quarter, to stall a touchdown drive, which at the time did not seem like a big play, but as it turned out it was a game-saver.

MR. UNSTOPPABLE, Daryl Schuler, leaves Crusaders behind him as he scores the third and deciding Tiger touchdown with two minutes to go in the Third Quarter. Unofficially, WPCNR had Schuler rushing for over 200 yards in the contest. Schuler keyed two drives in the third quarter to give the Tigers a 21-0 lead. Stepinac rallied on an onside kick to launch a drive that cut the lead to 21-14 with seven minutes to go in the game, but White Plains held them off on two possessions in the final moments to hold on to the win before approximately 6,000 fans. Schuler also scored the first WP TD midway in the second quarter.

|
WPCNR PRESS BOX. From Rob Crews of "Complete Game," November 10, 2009: Over the years, the interest in competitive softball has really taken off in the Northeast. Consequently, there are many girls who’s love for the game has motivated them to make Softball a year-round commitment, taking part in rigorous off-season training and showcase tournaments around the country in order to market themselves as Major Division I softball prospects.
Every now and then a special player is born here in Westchester –someone with special gifts combined with the focus and work ethic to hone those abilities into a polished top Division 1 prospect. On Thursday, November 12, 2009, at 5:30pm, Tammy Wray of Somers High School, will be signing her National Letter of Intent. For Tammy, it is the school that has won her heart during the softball recruitment process. Louisiana State University, a major force in College Softball, will be Tammy Wray’s new home in 2010, where she will continue her education in the School of Psychology.

Hey La! Hey La! The Black Bear's Back!
|
|
|
WPCNR PRESS BOX. November 8, 2009: The Black Bear's back! The Black Bear restaurant used to have a black bear mascot, who used to stand outside the restaurant. Mysteriously the bear wandered off one day two years ago. But this week, as of Thursday, the Black Bear returned to his job as Bear Maitre d' and the friendly confines of The Black Bear Saloon on Mamaroneck Avenue.

The Black Bear, "Unofficial Headquarters and Saturday Clubhouse" for the University of Michigan Alumni Association, where the Maize and Blue crowd gathers to watch their beloved Wolverines on the Big Ten Network, welcomed their bear back. Here the Black Bear with a Michigan hat encourages the Wolverines against Purdue.

Ryan McBride, one of the Managers of the Black Bear welcomes back the bar's mascot. McBride said he believes the bear hibernated for two years, did not have his GPS, and wandered back thanks to a good samaritan who brought the bear back home.

The Yankees Should Parade in Da Bronx -- Not the Canyon of the Ganiffs(Ganovim)

WPCNR VIEW FROM THE UPPER DECK. By Bull Allen. November 6,2009: Congratulations to the Bronx Bombers on their 27th World Championship, won Wednesday in The House The Taxpayers Built. Today, the Bombers will be hailed with a parade in a very bad neighborhood.

A 6-ounce beer and a dog:$14 in the upper deck in the fabulous new Stadium. September 16
Those of you going to the parade really should bring personal security you will be in the worst neighborhood in New York City filled with some its most dangerous criminals at large who have not yet been indicted.

WPCNR VIEW FROM THE UPPER DECK. By Bull Allen. September 30, 2009: I'm sorry. I have to get this off my chest. I cannot wait for the weekend. It has to be said now.
Up here in the mythical upper deck, behind the mike, straw fedora hat perched on the back of my head, at the WPIX mike, watching another hideous Metropolitan loss today. I can no longer sit around and listen to the excuses the press makes for the Mets of 2009.
The New York Metropolitans lost again today, 7-4 on a grand slammer by Justin Maxwell with two-out in the ninth off Francisco Rodriguez. A 5-run ninth by the Nats whom the Mets made look like the Yankees the last three nights. It was the third straight loss the Mets have rolled over for in the Nation’s Capitol this week.

CitiField, this Spring.
This team has no heart. They are not playing for their manager. They are not playing for themselves. They are not playing for their fans. They are not being managed for the fans. This is the team that gave up in June when their General Manager Omar Minaya did not make a move with his two big hitters went on the D.L.

Tigers Lick Chops, Finish off Lincoln, 41-14. Schuler,Sewitch & Cardon Deliva
|
|
|
WPCNR PRESS BOX. By John F. Bailey. September 17, 2009: The triple threats, Doug Sewitch,Daryl Schuler and Anthony Cardon sliced up Lincoln swiftly in White Plains first series Thursday evening when Sewitch took-in a 12 yard swing pass from the effortlessly smooth QB Mike Trapp for one first down at the Tiger 43, Number 23 Daryl Schuler took a hand off and slipped off tackle and thundered, spun and deked 13 yards to the Lancer 43. That worked so well Trapp gave the ball to Schuler again, who swept around left end to the Lincoln 32. On the next play with 3rd and 2 at the 32, the third member of the TD team, Anthony Cardon cruised around left end down the sideline for 32 yards and 6 points. Three minutes had gone by. That's the kind of night it was.

Daryl Schuler (23) headed to the Lincoln 32 on WP's opening 5 play 67 yard drive to open their 41-14 win over Lincoln Thursday night. Doug Sewitch (3) escorts him.
White Plains moved the ball at will, cruising to a 41-6 lead at half-time.Two long pass plays from Lincolin's Anthony Phynn to Keven Perez for a first down on the Tiger 35, and a 19 yarder to Brian Collado gave Lincoln a 7-6 deficit, after White Plains opening touchdown. But then the Tigers turned on the Sewitch and Schuler switch.

Doug Sewitch the Man in Black makes an over-the-shoulder, in-full-stride catch of a 39-yard perfectly thrown pass from Mike Trapp at the Lincoln 20, setting up the Tigers fourth touchdown (lugged in by who else, his law partner, Mr. Schuler), with 8 minutes to go in the first half for a 28-6 lead.
Earlier in the first quarter Sewitch leapt high in the air to catch a halfback option pass from Schuler, for a 36 yard completion giving WP a first down on the Lincoln 4 and Schuler completed the legwork for his first touchdown of the night, make it 14-6 WP at the 6 minute mark of the first quarter.
After the Tiger second TD in six minutes in the Opening Quarter, White Plains forced Lincoln to punt from their own goal line in the last minute of the First Quarter. A bad snap forced the Lincoln punter to bobble and drop the ball. Justin Lamply pounced on the fumble at the Lincoln 4. Mr. Schuler filed a 4 yard touchdown brief in the opening minute of the second quarter and the score was 20-6.
Schuler scored his third touchdown of the first half on a 35 yard run around right end with 4 minutes to go in the half and it was 34-6 with 4:40 left in the half. Joe Sperduto threw an 11-yard Touchdown pass to Anwar Barrett-Bell in the closing minutes of the first half. The score was 41-6 at the half.
The Tigers second team contained Lincoln in the second half and controlled the ball, holding Lincoln to 3 first downs in the second half. A pass in the final minute produced Lincoln's final score.
Coach Skip Stevens attributed the team's crisp play to his depth of the squad, which has produced, he said realistic practices, resulting in the almost penalty free first two games of the season, and blocking that has made Schuler and Sewitch and Cardon look on occassion like Doc Blanchard, Glenn Davis and Jim Brown. Mike Trapp has not had one mix-up on a hand-off in two games, and has poise and accuracy in getting the ball downfield.
It was a Tiger night.

WhitePlains Public Access Television Televised Thursday's football game on tape delay for telecast on Channels 76/77 (45/46) possibly next Wednesday evening. That's White Plains Public Access' John Vorperian and 1995-1996 Tiger great, Jaquai Ganson at the microphone.

The Cheerleaders were airborne.

The White Plains High School Band looked positively collegiate with an elaborate half-time performance.

Tigers Speed on Offense, Defense Stymie Gorton, 27-0
|
|
|
WPCNR PRESS BOX. By John F. Bailey. September 13, 2009: White Plains dominated Gorton in the drizzle and mud Saturday afternoon in Yonkers, moving the ball at will and holding Gorton to just two first downs in three quarters. The Tigers Doug Sewitch returned a punt 51 yards for touchdown in the last minute of the First Quarter when Gorton's punter Josh Grant out kicked his coverage.

As Sewitch bobbled the ball, picked it up, he swerved to the far sideline nine Wolves converged on Dough on the far sideline at the Gorton 40, Sewitch spun and cut back to his left, outflanked the Wolfpack pursuers, and slanted away from the last two defenders who missed him at the 25 and cruised into the end zone for the first touchdown-- 51 yards. That's Sewitch in far left corner of the endzone, completing his punt return for a TD.
After the kickoff, Gorton started on their 35 when the Tigers kicked the ball out of bounds. Gorton's Antheil Cobb was sacked at the 26 on third down and on the following punt, the Tigers took over at the Gorton 46. On First down, Quarterback Mike Trapp pitched the ball back to Daryl Schuler who broke around right end down the far side line for 46 yards and a touchdown, giving the Tigers a 13-0 lead.

Myron Moore far left, completing a 15 yard sweep to the Gorton 20 early in the Fourth Quarter to set up Daryl Schuler's third touchdown of the afternoon below.

Quarterback Joe Sperduto readies a handoff to Daryl Schuler behind Guard Brock Duncan. Schuler would pull out and go around left end and into paydirt, 20 yards for his third touchdown of the day.
Schuler had a great day for the Tigers, scoring touchdowns in the Third and Fourth Quarters. Gorton could not penetrate past the White Plains 30. Schuler's speed and shifty moves paid off in an estimated 200 yards rushing. Anthon Cardon complimented Schuler with strong running of his own. Accurate passing by starting QB Mike Trapp, the few times he did have to throw, was impressive. Mr. Trapp also took care of the handoff business with no fluffs, no muffs, no fumbles on a hard day to hold onto a football. A pretty impressive day of moving the ball for the Tigers with only two illegal procedure penalties, no offsides penalties through three quarters.
Myron Moore had a key fumble recovery at the Gorton 45 to stake the Tigers to great field position in the Third Quarter, setting up Schuler's second touchdown. Doug Sewitch picked off a Gorton pass in the third quarter to stall the one drive Gorton had.
They looked very good in their opening game of the football season. The Tigers play Lincoln Thursday evening.

Kickoff!
Above fabled ramparts pennants furl whip-snapping in the autumn sun.
The crescendo of a hundred drums rumbles across the immense green.
Puffy clouds float on blue horizon above the festive bowl rim
A hundred-thousand voices roar as one in sustained, building scream!
A whistle! The knights of a hundred seasons live once more
Ghosts of galloping heroes of autumns’ past dash down the field
The brown sphere lifts and soars above stadium rim caught by breeze and hopes
Descending end over end to the lone sentinel to begin another season like hundreds before.
Like cascades of waves reseeding and surging
the players hear the cheers drift down engulfing
As the carrier is brought to earth
Again and again, the combatants sally forth strength to strength hurling
Stealth and guile and heart thrown against swiftness, effort, will and girth.
Punctuated by swift bursts of peppy brass and drum thunder
from minstrels pomped and proud
Spurred by bursts of roars rewarding nimble run by deft running backs
The paladins of striped green plain struggle in golden sun lifted by the ultimate crowd
Awarding the diving miracle, the driving first down, the breakaway from the pack.
The reach-to-sky of over-the-shoulder touchdown catch down the sideline jaunt
Brings multitudes to their feet with a cheer the valiant receiver hears forever.
The turning aside of a powerful drive by defender gallant
Earns rapturous response as enemy back is caught and tossed asunder.
On into the afternoon shadows the struggle and tumult unfold.
Heroes emerge to replace the legends of stories told of past plays
Today’s young become tomorrow’s old.
Who will tell the tales of this afternoon’s heroes on other golden days

Pro Fastpitch Opens Championships Tomorrow--NPF Gains Prominence as Olympics Ban

WPCNR FASTPITCH NATION. From National Pro Fastpitch, Denver, Colorado. August 18, 2009 (EDITED): On the heels of last week’s announcement from the IOC regarding their recommendation to not include softball on the 2016 slate, the National Pro Fastpitch League suddenly becomes a more important focus for the fastpitch softball community. Fans, players, manufacturers, and media outlets are all asking the question “What will become of softball at the highest level?” and wondering if the National Pro Fastpitch League has the wherewithal to step into the void that will inevitably be left by no further Olympic competition.
Cowles Cup Opening Ceremonies, August, 2004 Featuring the New York Juggernaut and The New England Riptide.
A WPCNR query to the United States Olympic Committee as well as USA Softball on whether the Committee would continue to fund the USA Softball International team efforts nationally in view of the International Olympic Competition Committee rejecting softball for the 2016 Olympics as well as the 2012 Olympics has not been responded to yet by the USOC.
“We are obviously all disappointed by the decision of the IOC to omit softball as a medal sport in Olympic competition. Knowing the enthusiasm that has been generated for this sport in the past 13 years on the coat-tails of Olympic softball, the disappointment is surely felt worldwide by athletes, fans, coaches, and organizations,” commented Cheri Kempf, NPF Commissioner and President.

WPCNR View from the Clubhouse. By Bull Allen August 17, 2009: The headlines this morning out of windswept Chaska, Minnesota, disgust me, and once again distinguish the majority of the “professional” sports writing jury —the play writers out there – for their fickleness, savagery, and glee they show in attacking great players when they are down.

White Plains Senior Wins Gold Medal on USA Golf Team at Maccabiah Games
|
|
|
WPCNR PRESS BOX. Special to WPCNR. August 12, 2009: Aaron Klimchuk, 17, a resident of White Plains and an upcoming senior in White Plains High School, returns from 18th Maccabiah Games with Team USA Junior Golf Team winning the Gold Medal. The junior golf team, which played at Caesarea Golf Course in Caesarea, Israel, consisted of four junior golfers, of which Aaron was the youngest member.

Aaron Klimchuk (White Plains), Gary Raison, Noah Rattner, Marc Youngentob, Coach Ira Turret
The Maccabiah USA sent over 900 athletes to Israel in July. There were 88 teams participating in 26 sports with over 7000 athletes from 50 countries. Of the four members of the USA Junior Golf Team, Aaron Klimchuk was the only one from the tri-state region. The sense of Jewish camaraderie, education, culture and friendships that grew out of this experience were far an above the opportunity to compete but winning the Gold for the USA was definitely an added bonus.
